Tesla on track for future deliveries after posting another quarterly loss

Tesla1-624x351Tesla Motors Inc reported a steeper than expected quarterly loss on Wednesday on higher spending at its vehicle and battery factories, and said adjusted profitability could be within sight if the company meets its delivery goals. The 13th straight quarterly loss for the Silicon Valley electric carmaker underscores the financial hurdles that hamper it while it takes on increasingly ambitious goals – a ten-fold ramp of vehicle production in three years and the recent plan to acquire solar panel installer SolarCity Corp.

Tesla, led by entrepreneur Elon Musk, said it was still on track to deliver about 50,000 new Model S and Model X vehicles during the second half of 2016, and reiterated that it would spend $2.25 billion in capital expenditures in 2016 to prepare for its upcoming Model 3 sedan. If the company can fulfill those production and delivery goals in the second half of the year, “we’ve got a great chance of being non-GAAP profitable” Chief Financial Officer Jason Wheeler told analysts on a conference call without specifying a time period.

Tesla reported its first-ever quarterly profit in 2013. Shares of the company, which has offered to buy SolarCity for $2.6 billion, were little changed in after-hours trading. “There’s no doubt Tesla will remain the category leader as electric vehicles become increasingly mainstream, but it could be years before the bottom line justifies any investment in Tesla other than a purely speculative one,” said James Brumley, InvestorPlace.com analyst.

Tesla reported last month it had missed its vehicle delivery target for the second consecutive quarter, raising doubts it would hit its annual target. But Tesla could end the year just shy of its original delivery target of 80,000 to 90,000 vehicles for 2016 if it delivers 50,000 cars in the second half of 2016. “We were in production hell for the first six months of the year,” Musk told analysts during a conference call. “Man, it was hell. And we managed to climb out of hell partway through June and now the production line is humming and our suppliers mostly have their shit together.”

Musk warned he would fire suppliers and reorganize internal teams who fail to meet a target date of July 1 to begin production of the Model 3, even while acknowledging it will not be possible to meet that date. The company said it planned to open a new store every four days on average for the rest of the year, including in Taipei, Seoul and Mexico City, but did not disclose the cost.

Excluding items, Tesla lost $1.06 per share in the three months ended June 30, wider than analysts’ expected loss of 52 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Tesla said its net quarterly loss widened to $293.2 million, or $2.09 per share, from $184.2 million, or $1.45 per share, a year earlier. Total revenue rose 33 percent to $1.27 billion. Tesla said gross margins will improve by 2-3 percentage points in the second half of the year, although adjusted operating expenses will increase for the full year by 30 percent.

Musk sketched out an ambitious plan last month to venture into manufacturing electric trucks and buses, as well as expanding the company’s solar energy business. He has cast the SolarCity tie-up as a long-term bet on a carbon-free energy and transportation company that provides cars, battery storage, solar panels and other energy solutions, while leveraging technology and cost savings from the combined entity.

SolarCity’s chairman and biggest shareholder, Musk has said the combined company will help save at least $150 million a year and require only a “small equity capital raise” next year. But some analysts are wary of the combination of two companies burning through huge amounts of cash. Tesla unveiled its massive battery factory, the Gigafactory, in Nevada last week, and on the conference call, Musk said he foresees “exponential growth” in Tesla’s storage battery business.

Oppo F1s review: A pleasing design with a great selfie camera

oppo-f1s-1Oppo had a fairly decent start to the year as it launched the F1 and the F1 Plus photography centric smartphones. They were slightly overpriced but both of them, especially the F1 Plus, had the capability to shoot some impressive selfies. Today there aren’t a lot of smartphone makers that focus on creating selfie smartphones, but it seems that Oppo is going to stick to it as it just launched the F1s which yet again gets the ‘Selfie Expert’ Moniker.

While it is an updated to the F1, it feels like an update to the F1 Plus. Here is our in depth review of the smartphone.

Build and design: 8/10

More than the F1, the new F1s seems like an update for the F1 Plus. It is very similar in terms of looks with minor differences in the overall design. You get a metal back and frame with a glass finish on the front. The metal finish at the back has a matte finish adding a premium touch to the design. Even though there isn’t anything new or different in the design, the handset has been crafted well and we found the build quality quite sturdy.

oppo-f1s-3

The 5.5-inch display dominating the front is another reason why we think this is an update to the F1 Plus. Above that is the earpiece, the front facing camera and the proximity and light sensors while below the display is the fingerprint embedded in the home button along with a capacitive back and recent buttons. Things are a bit glossy on the front so expect smudges and fingerprints to creep up.

At the back you will find the camera on the top left corner, which protrudes out but is hardly noticeable. There is also an LED flash along with it. The antenna bands, or what seems like them, are just thin looking chrome stripes.

oppo-f1s-5

The metal edges are slightly raised and house the power button and the SIM card/microSD card tray on the right. A secondary microphone sits at the top and the volume rocker buttons on the left. The 3.5mm audio jack, the primary microphone, microUSB port and the speaker are all placed on the bottom edge.

For a 5.5-inch smartphone, the F1s feels light and manages to fit easily in one hand. It doesn’t slip out easily either thanks to the brushed metal finish.

Features: 7.5/10

The company has placed the smartphone as mid-range device and it features a 5.5-inch LCD display with a 1280×720 HD resolution which means a pixel density of 267ppi. The smartphone is powered by a MediaTek MT6750 processor which is built using the 28nm process, and is an octa-core SoC consisting of four Cortex-A53 cores with a clock rate of 1.5GHz and the rest four Cortex-A53 cores with a clock rate of 1.0GHz. There’s 3GB of RAM, while the graphics are handled by a Mali-T860 GPU. The internal storage is 32GB that is expandable using a microSD card.

The camera department includes a 13MP rear unit with PDAF and an LED flash sits at the front along with a 16MP camera to take impressive selfies. The connectivity package includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, microUSB, GPS/A-GPS, 4G LTE along with VoLTE support. The handset runs on Android 5.1 Marshmallow with Oppo’s Color OS 3.0 on top while a 3,075mAh battery fuels the smartphone.

Display: 7/10

The smartphone features a 5.5-inch LCD display with a 1280×720 resolution which translates to 267ppi and it is protected by Gorilla Glass 4. One usually expects a 1080p resolution on such a large display, but the HD resolution doesn’t look bad either. It offers adequate brightness, but under sunlight it does struggle a bit. Colour saturation is spot and even the viewing angles are wide as we didn’t see any colour shift.

The smartphone gives an option of changing the fonts and even the font size. Apart from that you also get a blue light filter which helps in reducing eye strain when using the smartphone for a long period or at night.

OS: 7.5/10

oppo-f1s-UI

The F1s runs on Oppo’s ColorOS 3.0 UI layer on top of Android 5.1 Lollipop. It is the same version as we saw on the F1 Plus which was inspired by iOS. The icons, menus and even the notification shade are similar to Apple’s mobile platform. Now we’ve seen a bunch of Chinese UIs that mimic iOS but this one is surprisingly smooth. We didn’t see any signs of slowing down or frame drops. It seems like a nice approach to the software as you get a sense of minimalism on an Android device, but it can get confusing at times especially if you are used to a more traditional stock-like Android UI.

The OS offers some customisation options via a themes store and a feature that can automatically change the lockscreen wallpaper from a selection of online pictures. We didn’t notice a lot of bloatware on the device, just a system optimising app, a backup app and an office app.

All in all we were impressed by ColorOS 3.0 and how smooth everything looked on the smartphone. Having said that, there are are some points to consider. Oppo is still using Android 5.1 and in about a month’s time Android 7.0 Nougat will be officially released. Where is the Marshmallow update? Another issue is that the UI takes up a lot of space. Out of the 32GB of inbuilt memory, 25GB is user accessible but we noticed that an additional 4.5GB is used by system under the ‘Other’ section. Probably a chunk of the OS that utilises this space to keep the UI snappy, but again offering a 32GB smartphone with only 20GB of free space is a bit misleading. There is an option to add a microSD card, so it isn’t entirely a deal breaker. Something that we had noticed on the F1 Plus was the battery indicator where you didn’t get any info as to how much charge was left until you actually plug the smartphone to a charger. The same issue remains on the F1s.

Performance: 7.5/10

Day to day performance on the smartphone is great, apps open quickly and even multitasking is handled well thanks to the 3GB of RAM. Gaming proved to be excellent with very minor frame drops in games like Asphalt 8 and Dead Trigger 2. The overall performance felt close to a premium device and the processor, which is a 64-bit chip from MediaTek proved to be quite good. The smartphone doesn’t heat up that much either and we noticed that only two or three cores out of the total 8 cores were operational most of the time. This was probably done to improve battery performance on the smartphone.

oppo-f1s-benchmark-1

oppo-f1s-benchmark-2

The synthetic benchmarks however pointed out that the hardware is indeed made for mid-ranged or a budget device. The results were not so impressive and were lower than handsets like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and even the iPhone 5s.

Call quality and network connectivity is flawless on the device and even the loudspeaker is pretty decent. One thing that really impressed us was the fingerprint scanner. It is one of the fastest on the market today, so much so that we believe it is the same unit that has been used on the OnePlus 3, you know since Oppo and OnePlus are closely related. Just a slight press on the home button unlocks the smartphone instantly.

oppo-f1s-4

Camera: 7.5/10

Touted as yet another ‘Selfie Expert’, the F1s comes with a 13MP rear camera with PDAF and an LED flash while a 16MP snapper takes care of the selfie department. Oppo has been focusing on photography and while the F1 and the F1 Plus were above average shooters, the new F1s sees a slight improvement over the two.

The camera app is just like the one on Apple devices but it offers the five common modes including timelapse, videos, photo, beauty and panorama that work for the front as well as the rear camera. Other features for the front camera include some filters, a double exposure mode and even a GIF mode. The rear camera gets the same features with the addition of an Ultra HD mode which can shoot 25MP photos and an expert mode, which is basically a manual mode. One thing that we noticed was that we cannot set the resolution, so its either full screen, rectangle or square.

Both the front and rear cameras can take equally good pictures. The focus is fast, colours look very natural and sharpness is well maintained, although the front camera oversharpens images on some occasions. The front camera also has a lower focal length so it is suited for closer subjects as it can’t focus on objects that are far away. We were quite impressed with the capabilities of the front camera as we got crisp looking selfie pictures.

Oppo F1s

In low light both the cameras struggle to keep up, there is visible noise and loss of details. The front camera also brings a pink tone especially around the eyes when you take selfies in low light, probably adding a flash unit on the front would have helped.

Battery: 8/10

Oppo-f1s-battery-bench

The Oppo F1s packs a 3,075mAh battery which compared to the F1 Plus is larger without adding further bulk to the overall design. Add to that a 720p display and you easily get a full day backup which includes incoming and sending of emails, Whatsapp and other messenger services, watching a few videos, placing a few calls and browsing through the Facebook timeline. The benchmark test churned out 9 hours and 19 minutes which is not bad at all, but it was slightly lower than the F1 Plus.

Verdict

Priced at Rs 17,990 it seems a bit to much to ask for, but then that’s how Oppo smartphones have always been. You get similar a performing smartphones at about Rs 10,000-Rs 15,000 with almost a similar premium design. Justifying the cost with superior front camera might not be the best way to go.

Having said that, if you are a selfie lover, the F1s is something to go for. There aren’t a lot of smartphones on the market that provide a 16MP front camera that can take selfies as good as this smartphone. As an overall performer, the smartphone is pretty good in terms of battery life and daily tasks. We were also impressed with its design, the super fast fingerprint scanner and the smooth and stable ColorOS UI which imitates Apple’s iOS quite well. It might not be able to compare with smartphones in terms of benchmark performance, but it is certainly not a slow device, so thumbs up on the performance as well.

Sridevi's daughter Jhanvi Kapoor and Shikhar Pahariya lock lips; pictures go viral [PHOTOS]

Sridevi's daughter Jhanvi Kapoor is in news after some photos showing her kissing her boyfriend Shikhar Pahariya became viral on social media. The pictures show Jhanvi and Shikhar having a liplock and posing for the camera.

Shikhar happens to be the brother of Veer Pahariya, who is reportedly dating Saif Ali Khan's daughter Sara Ali Khan. The pictures of the intimate moments between Jhanvi and Shikhar appear to be from a party as another couple is also seen kissing each other in the frame.

Jhanvi, who is Sridevi's elder daughter, is quite popular on social media and already has a good fan-following. It was earlier reported that cameras of some photographers were seized by her bouncers after they tried to click pictures of Jhanvi at an airport.

The star kid was apparently not in the mood to pose for shutterbugs and asked her bodyguards to stop the lensmen from clicking pictures. The bodyguards are then said to have seized the cameras. They returned the equipment only after Jhanvi left the venue.

Check Jhanvi and Shikhar's moment of physical closeness here:

Rumours had earlier suggested that Jhanvi would make her Bollywood debut soon with Karan Johar's "Student of the Year 2."

KJo was said to be having frequent meetings with Sridevi to cast Jhanvi in the sequel. But the reports remain unconfirmed. It was also being said that she would make her debut in the South Indian film industry with the Tamil movie, "Ok Kanmani." But Sridevi had later denied the buzz.

Dalit fire, Patel ire and land mire force Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel to retire

AHMEDABAD/NEW DELHI: Gujarat's first woman chief minister, Anandiben Patel, dramatically quit on Monday, posting her resignation letter on her official website, linked to Facebook and Twitter. Her exit, which had been anticipated for some time, could help the BJP leadership's efforts to repair the political damage in the party's stronghold of Gujarat ahead of the assembly polls+ , scheduled for end-2017.

Anandiben+ announced her resignation at around 5pm before proceeding to meet governor O P Kohli at the Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar.

She was under pressure for almost a year following a strident quota agitation by the Patels - BJP's main votebank in Gujarat. Subsequent allegations of land scams involving her family members and the latest protests over flogging of Dalits by 'gau rakshaks' in Una on July 11 added to her woes, amid growing realisation within the BJP that she may not be able to ensure victory for the party in the assembly elections.

Veteran minister Nitin Patel and state party chief Vijay Rupani are said to be frontrunners to succeed Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel, although BJP national president Amit Shah's name is also doing the rounds in the state capital. Patel has the advantage of belonging to the influential community, which has been the core of the saffron base and needs to be placated. However, Rupani, a Jain, is considered to be more energetic and could help the party do a tightrope walk in a scenario of competing demands of different castes. It's unclear as to whether Shah, who's spearheading BJP's campaign to wrest UP in next year's elections, would want to give up his very powerful all-India position to return to his home state.

A meeting of the parliamentary board is to be called shortly to accept the resignation, a mere formality, and to appoint Patel's successor.

Anandiben+ said she decided to pass on the baton in deference to the age ceiling of 75 years laid down by PM Modi and because she wanted her successor to get time to prepare for the Vibrant Gujarat summit in January.

However, the chief trigger could be the leadership's concern about mounting problems in Gujarat, a state it has controlled since the 1990s, which served as the launch pad for Modi's successful bid to become PM. Besides the threat of the loss of a section of Patels, the leadership is also having to contend with the estrangement of Dalits and the efforts of rivals to stitch together a coalition comprising Scheduled Castes and Muslims.

Anandiben's resignation was the subject of speculation since Hardik Patel started his campaign for a Patel quota. Many in the party felt she did not respond well to the challenge, which threatened to dent BJP's hold over Patels. Allegations of corruption were another worry. But it was her failure to respond promptly to the public flogging of Dalits for skinning a dead cow that proved to be the tipping point for the leadership, sources said. The footage of cow vigilantes mercilessly assaulting four Dalits could have repercussions for BJP's effort to woo Dalits, a significant objective for the UP polls, and the larger effort of the RSS to consolidate the Hindu vote.

The leadership appeared to have decided to change her in April-May but could not execute the plan because of its preoccupation with assembly elections and, more important, its inability to find a suitable successor. Anandiben read the writing on the wall and offered to quit in June when she met Modi and Amit Shah during the BJP national executive in Allahabad.

Though she was allowed to continue, there were indications of the central leadership's increased involvement in decisions, including the appointment of senior bureaucrats like the chief secretary and IPS officers. According to sources, this convinced the CM that her time was up.

This time, with rivals using the Una atrocity to mobilise Dalits against BJP, the leadership made no effort to get her to retrace her steps. Shah told reporters that Anandiben sent her resignation in the morning itself; that is, hours before she went public on Facebook and Twitter.

However, the leadership appeared to be bolstering Anandiben's case that the decision to go was entirely her own. "She herself has said she wanted someone to take over before Vibrant Gujarat and the state polls later next year," Shah said, confirming that the CM had offered to quit earlier but was persuaded to stay on.

Party sources also said Anandiben would be given a respectful farewell in which Modi and Shah would be present. She is likely to be accommodated as a governor.

Though the resignation came an hour after Congress member Shankersinh Vaghela accused Anandiben of a Rs 11,000 crore scam, BJP dismissed the charge as baseless and politically motivated.

This was in order, given the standing that the outgoing CM has in the BJP.

Anandiben was Modi's obvious choice as CM when he became PM in May 2014. She was hand-picked by him in the mid-80s and roped in to head the BJP women's wing in the state. She remained his closest loyalist even when Modi was banished from Gujarat in the mid-90s at the behest of the then CM Keshubhai Patel.
In the run-up to her resignation, Anandiben announced a series of populist steps like withdrawing scores of cases against Patidar members, exempting cars from toll tax on state highways and speedy implementation of the 7th Pay Commission recommendations for state employees. All this, while her senior colleagues kept complaining that she was taking decisions and making announcements without consulting the cabinet.

New York Post runs naked pics of Trump’s wife… again

NEW YORK: The New York Post on Monday ran a front-page picture of potential first lady Melania Trump naked, prompting criticism on social media and charges of misogyny.

It was the second day in a row that the Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid ran a front page nude image of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's wife from her years as a young model.

"Menage a Trump," ran the headline, touting the paper's "exclusive photos."

The picture shows a nude Melania being hugged by another nude woman as she lies in bed.

On Sunday, the Post ran a front-page picture of a nude Melania, with stars covering her breasts, under the title "The Ogle Office."

The Republican's presidential campaign appeared to shrug off the pictures.

Trump adviser Jason Miller told CNN on Sunday that there was "nothing to be embarrassed about with the pictures — she's a beautiful woman."

Both sets of photos were taken in 1995 when the 46-year-old Slovenian-born Melania was 25 and working as a model, before she met Trump.

The pictures were published the following year in Max, a now-defunct French magazine.

The New York Post endorsed Trump for president in mid-April, describing him at the time as "a potential superstar of vast promise, but making rookie mistakes."

The reaction to the pictures on Twitter was mixed.

"Shame on you #NewYorkPost for slut-shaming Melania Trump. The US needs no more neanderthal input to this already disgraceful election," read one tweet.

"I am appalled and outraged" by the cover photo, read another tweet, adding: "Misogyny is misogyny."

Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel offers to step down

Over two months ahead of her 75th birthday, Gujarat’s first woman chief minister Anandiben Patel offered to step down from the helm in a social media post, asking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership to relieve her of the top responsibility in the state.

Citing examples of other party members who have stepped down after attaining the age of 75 years, Patel said that the move was exemplary and she was following the same.

“Since sometime senior party workers have voluntarily stepped down after attaining the age of 75 years to make way for the next generation in the party, which is exemplary for all. Even I would be completing 75 years in November. However, 2017, will see state assembly elections being held in Gujarat in December as well as the biennial Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January. In order to provide ample time for the new chief minister for these events, through this letter, I humbly request the senior party leadership to relieve me from the responsibility two months in advance,” Patel said in a post published on her Facebook and Twitter page in Gujarati.
Patel’s offer to resign comes at a time when the BJP-led Gujarat government is reeling under unrest from different communities such as the Patidars and Dalits since almost an year. According to observers, the recent uprising among the Dalits to protest against the public thrashing of four Dalit youths in Una over alleged cow killing by some so-called 'cow protectors' has left the state administration embarrassed. Senior ministers and party workers were unavailable for comment.

Patel, who took charge as the CM of Gujarat in May 2014 from Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the general elections, has been in the state government since the past 18 years, a significant time of which she has held ministerial posts in education and revenue.

The post put to rest speculations of her exit that had risen in the wake of recent resignation of Union Minister Najma Heptulla due to the undeclared age bar of 75 years for ministers put by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier, a couple of ministers in Madhya Pradesh, including senior leader Babulal Gaur and Sartaj Singh, were dropped from the state cabinet by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan due to the age bar.

Patel will cross the age bar of 75 years on November 21 this year as she was born in 1941. Heptulla, who crossed 75 years, was reportedly asked to submit her resignation.

Being in the state government for the past 18 years and holding significant posts, I have always endeavoured to bring in creative solutions and ensure implementation of result-oriented, citizen-friendly schemes.

Maintaining that she had "made all efforts to serve Gujarat's citizens", Patel thanked PM Modi for trusting her with the post of chief minister.
