George Clooney Pushing Brad Pitt To Come To Halloween Party & Get Mind Off Angelina

Brad Pitt needs to get his mind off the Angelina Jolie divorce ASAP. That’s why George Clooney is pushing the actor to attend his Halloween party,

George Clooney, 55, is NOT about to let buddy Brad Pitt, 52, turn into this depressive and reclusive guy! Halloween is all about having fun, so it’s the perfect excuse to force Brad out of the house. After all, he needs a good distraction to keep his mind away from Angelina Jolie, 41. “Brad has been invited to George’s big annual halloween party in Beverly Hills Saturday night,” a source tells EXCLUSIVELY. “George has been encouraging Brad to attend his big A-list party with the most beautiful single women in Hollywood in attendance, but Brad has been hesitant to commit.”

It must be hard for Brad to get back into party mode, considering he’s taken on the fatherly role for 12 years with SIX kids under his wing. Even though the Fight Club actor is the biological father to only three of them, all of Angie’s kids feel like family to him. That being said, reconnecting with them since the Angie divorce hasn’t been easy, as his first meeting with Maddox was a total disaster. Brad was excited to reunite with his son inside the therapist’s office on Oct. 19, but Maddox did NOT want to be there!

“Brad is still in the middle of a difficult time and is no mood to party,” continues the source. “George has been talking to Brad almost every day since Brad split from Angie, and has been incredibly supportive. However, until the party happens Brad is not sure if he’s up for being social.” We understand that healing takes baby steps, but it’s unhealthy for Brad to stay cooped up in the house alone all the time.

Despite the old saying, people do judge a book by its cover. And so in a crowded market, giving your horror novel the right look is crucial in making it stand out on the shelves.

In fact, even with proven bestsellers, publishers are continually innovating and trying out new cover designs; repackaging the classics to see what sells best. And as a result, we’ve seen some truly stunning artwork gracing the covers of the horror fiction releases over the last few decades.

Here we bring together nine of our favourite horror novel covers to inspire your own designs.

01. Dracula by Bram Stoker

This 1980s cover captures the deadly spirit of the original Dracula

This classic 1897 novel by Irish author Bram Stoker introduced us to the iconic character of Count Dracula, spawning a century of movie and theatre adaptations that eventually led to cute and cuddly parodies like Count Duckula and Sesame Street’s The Count. But the original novel remains a bloodcurdling classic, and this classic 1980s Penguin cover conveys that sense of brooding malevolence beautifully.

Depicting Dracula’s thin, pale hand emerging from a cobwebbed coffin, this cover masterfully proves the horror axiom that hinting at a monster’s presence is more sinister than revealing it. You can see other classic covers for Bram Stoker’s novel here.

02. Salem’s Lot by Stephen King

An uncharacteristically artful cover for a Stephen King classic

In the second half of the 20th century, Stephen King became the undisputed king of horror fiction. Sadly, though, the covers for many of his best books have been a little low-rent. But here’s one that, in our opinion, bucks the trend.

King’s second novel, 1975’s Salem’s Lot, tells the story of a writer who returns to his childhood town only to discover that the residents are becoming vampires. And this 21st-century cover design gets right to the heart of the horror. It sets a chilling atmosphere with its sinister, impressionistic style, haunting central character, and scrawled lettering, instantly summoning the feel of a desperate struggle to survive. You can see a larger selection of Stephen King novel covers here.

03. The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson

A simple concept, brilliantly executed

First published in 1977, The Amityville Horror is claimed to be based on the real-life paranormal experiences of a family in Long Island, who moved into a house said to be possessed by a murderer, although it has since attracted lawsuits over its truthfulness.

That controversy asides, the novel is a true horror classic, and this contemporary cover design from Pocket Books shows how sometimes the simplest ideas can be the spookiest.

Although the novel’s subtitle ‘A True Story’ has now been dropped (presumably for legal reasons), casting a black-and-white photo of the actual house against a subtle filter of hellfire flames conveys the same idea with quiet efficiency.

04. The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris

Even moths can be scary, as this classic cover proved

First published in 1988, The Silence of the Lambs is the second novel by Thomas Harris featuring cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter, who was later immortalised by Anthony Hopkins in the blockbuster film.

The iconic novel has had many covers, mainly themed around what looks like a butterfly, but is actually a death’s-head hawkmoth (so-called because the patterns on its thorax resemble a skull). This eerie design is our favourite: with its starkly visceral, stencilled moth against a distorted anguished background, it echoes the morbid nature of the tale brilliantly.

05. Lightning by Dean Koontz

An imaginative treatment for a pulp horror classic

Often the most effective horror covers hold back from being too literal in favour of the sinisterly suggestive, and here’s a great example. The 1989 novel by the best-selling horror writer Dean Koontz, Lightning tells the story of a girl born during a freak lightning storm. This 2003 reprint features an arresting design that eschews the visual cliches of lightning (stormy skies, windswept landscapes) and goes for something a little more abstract.

But it’s no less spooky for that, and by seamlessly combining the evocative artwork with the main typography, the effect is instantly eye-catching and intriguing.

06. American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

This expressionistic painting captures Ellis’s unique novel perfectly

Bret Easton Ellis’s 1991 story of Patrick Bateman, a serial killer and Manhattan businessman, is a thrillingly dark satire of consumerism, greed and the 1980s yuppie lifestyle. And in some countries it was deemed so disturbing that it could only be sold shrink-wrapped.

Luckily, other nations weren’t so squeamish, and were rewarded with this stunningly evocative cover painting from New York artist Marshall Arisman. Its expressionistic depiction of a faceless businessman, formed from smeared brush strokes, is chillingly sinister and masterfully conveys the unnerving atmosphere of this groundbreaking novel.

07. Coraline

Paul A. Hotaling’s creepy cover for Neil Gaiman’s novel hits all the right buttons

The story of Coraline, a girl who steps through a door to find another house strangely similar to her own, is now best known for the child-friendly 2009 movie adaptation. But Neil Gaiman’s original horror novella of 2002 is pretty dark stuff, and this front cover by Paul A. Hotaling harnesses the essence of child-like drawings to portray that sense of the sinister perfectly. Who can’t fail to be creeped out by those ghostly grabbing hands? The beautiful black-and-white sketches by Dave McKean inside the book are very much worth checking out too.

08. Let The Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist

This Swedish story’s original cover is beautifully otherworldly

Let the Right One In was a 2004 tale of the relationship between a 12-year-old boy and a vampire child in a working-class suburb of Stockholm in the 1980s. This game-changing novel has sported a variety of covers over the years, but this eerie design for the original Swedish edition remains our favourite. Illustrating one of the story’s pivotal scenes in an ethereal, otherworldly style, it nonetheless feels grounded in real-life; just like the novel.

09. Pride & Prejudice & Zombies by Jane Austen & Seth Grahame-Smith

From the sublime to the (intentionally) ridiculous. A tongue-in-cheek mashup of a Jane Austen’s classic 1813 Pride and Prejudice with modern zombie fiction, Seth Grahame-Smith’s 2009 parody novel took a similar approach to its cover art. Created by comedian and illustrator Doogie Horner, it’s a “zombification” of an early 19th-century painting of Marcia Fox by William Beechey. A simple idea, but one that’s been executed perfectly and can’t help but raise a smile from bookshop browsers.

US Congress lawmakers ask for clarification on new hacking rules

A bipartisan group of lawmakers in the U.S. Congress on Thursday asked the Justice Department to clarify how a looming rule change to the government’s hacking powers could impact privacy rights of innocent Americans.

The change, due to take place on December 1, would let judges issue search warrants for remote access to computers located in any jurisdiction, potentially including foreign countries. Magistrate judges can normally only order searches within the jurisdiction of their court, which is typically limited to a few counties.

“We are concerned about the full scope of the new authority that would be provided to the Department of Justice,” 23 senators and representatives wrote to Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

The Supreme Court in April approved amendments to Rule 41 of the federal rules of criminal procedure that would allow judges to issue warrants in cases when a suspect uses anonymizing technology to conceal the location of his or her computer or for an investigation into a network of hacked or infected computers, such as a botnet.

Those amendments will take effect on December 1 of this year unless Congress passes legislation that would reject, amend or postpone the changes. Some lawmakers, led by Democratic Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, have introduced legislation that would halt the changes, but it has yet to gain much traction.

In their letter, the lawmakers asked how the government would prevent under the expanded rule so-called “forum shopping,” where prosecutors seek warrants in districts considered more favorable to law enforcement.

They also asked how the Justice Department intends to notify users when electronic devices have been searched and whether law enforcement has the authority to disable malicious software on a protected device, including those belonging to innocent Americans, among other questions.

The Justice Department has worked on Rule 41 changes for years, arguing they are procedural in nature and necessary to keep pace with criminal threats posed by evolving technology.

Civil liberties groups and some technology companies, including Alphabet Inc’s Google, have said the changes could allow for searches that run afoul of privacy rights. The Justice Department is reviewing the lawmakers’ letter, which asked for a response within two weeks, spokesman Peter Carr said.

Lightroom Rapid Editing Plus – the Workflow

In my previous post, I revealed the concept of a new editing approach where I found the way to emulate or hack the opacity functionality that does not currently exist in Lightroom.

After successfully testing the new “opacity” functionality and being happy with the results, I started testing different workflow approaches to find the most effective way to edit photos in Lightroom using the Rapid Editing Plus approach.

First, for each preset in the Landscape Collection, I created 10 additional versions by generating different opacity versions in 10% increments.

.While this worked well, I realized that the versions where the opacity range was between 10% and 30% were too subtle to see any effects and produced totally useless results.

In order to save room and make the approach even more compact, I deleted the 10%, 20% and 30% versions for all presets.

After further testing the Rapid Editing Plus approach using different photos to find the most streamlined workflow possible, I came up with yet another variation.

All my standard presets have a hard coded exposure value, which means that when you apply any of the presets they set the exposure value to zero. This is based on the idea that, if a photo is underexposed or overexposed, you can modify it using the TOOLKIT adjustments.

With the Rapid Editing Plus system, I took a different approach. Now, all the presets are exposure independent, which means that the presets do not set or override the exposure value, leaving it untouched.

When I develop any preset, my goal is that it will produce the intended effect when the photo is properly exposed. But, we all know from experience that achieving balanced exposure is not always possible. The best example is in landscape photos that feature the open sky. By setting the exposure for the bright areas (sky), we intentionally keep the shadows underexposed. It is also very common that even a mild deviation from the proper exposure produces unpredictable and unintended results.

Now with the Rapid Editing Plus workflow, the behavior of the new exposure allows us to adjust the exposure before starting any preset based editing.

To get started with the new approach, here’s my proposed outline for the Rapid Editing Plus workflow.

1

Step 1: Exposure Adjustment

Select the image and evaluate the exposure value. If it needs any adjustment, use the TOOLKIT or the Lightroom Basic slider to set the exposure value to achieve the desired result.

Rapid Editing TOOLKIT Exposure Adjustment

Lightroom Basic Panel Exposure Adjustment

2

Step 2: Style Preset

Open the PLUS preset folder and apply the Natural 100% preset. I always start editing with the Natural preset because its “natural” result gives me a better understanding of the editing potential of the selected photo.

I suggest starting with the 100% version because that is how it was intended to work when the effect was first created.

3

Step 3: Setting Up Interface

Open the Navigator window above the Presets panel if it is not already open.

Drag the Lightroom left panel boundary all the way to the right, making it as wide as possible. The goal is to have the biggest possible preview in the Navigator panel.

Step 4: Palying With the Opacity

Move the mouse over the Natural preset versions with the various opacity values without clicking on them. By doing this, you can see a real-time preview of the effects in the Navigator window, which will help you identify the editing effect you like the most.

Step 5: Standard Rapid Editing

When you see the version you like the best, click on it to apply the effect on the main image.

In this particular case I selected Natural 70% version.

From that point, you can use a combination of TOOLKIT adjustments to fine tune the photo using the standard Lightroom Rapid Editing approach

I applied the following TOOLKIT adjustments:  9. Open Shadow +++, 13 Contrast ++, 17 Clarity ++, 32 Vignetting ++

And here is the Lightroom Rapid Editing Formula: Natural 70% (9, 13, 17, 32)

This is all I have for now.

Lightroom Rapid Editing Plus is not quite yet ready for primetime, but what I can tell you is that any photographer who purchased my Landscape Collection will be able to get the Plus version at no charge.

Lightroom Rapid Editing Plus – the Workflow

In my previous post, I revealed the concept of a new editing approach where I found the way to emulate or hack the opacity functionality that does not currently exist in Lightroom.

After successfully testing the new "opacity" functionality and being happy with the results, I started testing different workflow approaches to find the most effective way to edit photos in Lightroom using the Rapid Editing Plus approach.

I always start editing with the Natural preset because its "natural" result gives me a better understanding of the editing potential of the selected photo.

4

Step 4: Palying With the Opacity

Move the mouse over the Natural preset versions with the various opacity values without clicking on them. By doing this, you can see a real-time preview of the effects in the Navigator window, which will help you identify the editing effect you like the most.

5

‘Shivaay’ movie review: A visually beautiful film, but lacks emotions

‘Shivaay’, Ajay Devgn’s most ambitious project is all set to release tomorrow. The film stars Ajay in the lead role and is also directed by him. It is surely one of the most awaited films of the year, and the trailer of the movie had generated a lot of curiosity among the moviegoers to watch the film. So, was the wait worth or not? Let’s find out in this ‘Shivaay‘ movie review.

The movie is about Shivaay (Ajay Devgn) whose work is to take people for trekking in the snow-capped mountain. One day a Bulgarian girl, Olga (Erika Kaar), and her friends go for trekking with Shivaay. Olga and Shivaay fall in love, and the former becomes pregnant. She wants to go back to Bulgaria, but Shivaay insists her to give birth to their child and then go; she agrees. After the daughter is born, Olga returns to Bulgaria, and Shivaay starts living a normal life with his daughter, Gaura (Abigail Eames). After eight years, her daughter comes to know that her mother is there in Bulgaria and requests Shivaay to take her to meet her mother. Shivaay and Gaura reach Bulgaria. In the hotel in which they are staying, a small kid is being sexually abused. Shivaay saves him by calling the cops. Next day, Gaura gets kidnapped. Will Shivaay be able to save his daughter?

Well, there are many aspects in the film that are simply mind-blowing like the locations, the cinematography, the background score, and the breath-taking action sequences (especially in the first half). However, the film has a resemblance to Rani Mukerji-starrer ‘Mardaani’. While in Rani’s film, she was searching for a girl who was like a daughter to her, here there’s a father who is searching for his daughter who has been kidnapped, and will be used for flesh trade (prostitution). But, this story concentrates more on the father-daughter relationship than the trafficking issue. There is a slight disappointment as the film doesn’t connect with us emotionally.

Ajay tried to make a large, visually beautiful, emotional film; well he successfully treats our eyes with some fantastic visuals, but somehow fails to narrate the emotions. The climax is a bit too dragged, but the action sequences in the first half are simply stunning and will keep you at the edge of your seat. One person who deserves an award for the movie is Aseem Bajaj; his cinematography is mind-blowing.

When it comes to actors, of course Ajay steals the show. He is fantastic in action sequences, and has carried the emotional scenes quite well. Erika Kaar looks beautiful, but acting isn’t up to the mark. Sayyeshaa Saigal makes a promising debut. She is very good in the film, and we hope to see her in more films. Abigail Eames is fantastic; kids are truly doing wonders on the big screen nowadays.

On the whole, ‘Shivaay’ is a visually beautiful film, but lacks emotions.

Stop By The Salad Bar To Get Just The Ingredients You Need For Soup For One

Grocery salad bars aren’t the best or cheapest options for fresh produce, but if you’re shopping or cooking for one, they can be a windfall. Stop by and grab just the ingredients you need for soups or other dishes, with no fear of overbuying, no leftovers, and little pre-cooking prep needed.

While this probably isn’t cheaper than buying bulk groceries to make soup (since you have to pay by pound at the salad bar, and raw ingredients may be cheaper depending on how much you buy,) it does allow you to better control the ingredients you get.

For example, you could grab several different kinds of beans, fresh spinach, sliced onions, and tomatoes for a simple, tasty soup you can just throw together when you get home, enough for just that night, or that night and lunch at the office tomorrow. Plus, there are plenty of toppings, like shredded or crumbled cheese or croutons. You end up with just enough ingredients for one or two meals without mountains of leftovers hanging around your kitchen or half empty bags and cans of ingredients you have to use up or toss because you didn’t use them up.

Shera for Salman Khan, Yuvraj Ghorpade for Aamir: Bodyguards of Bollywood stars

On Wednesday, 26 October, Salman Khan’s bodyguard Shera was questioned by the Mumbai police on charges of physical assault. Akhtar Moin Qureshi filed a complaint with the DN Nagar Police Station, alleging that Shera had threatened him with a gun, and hit him, in an altercation between the two on Tuesday night.

Shera has denied the allegation, saying that the duo did have an argument, but it was only verbal.

“Nothing happened on Tuesday,” Shera told Times Now on Wednesday morning, before being questioned by the police. “I went to meet a friend at Kokilaben Hospital, then I went to Pop Tate’s where I had a verbal argument on the phone, but no physical scuffle. The police came to my house in the morning and now I am accompanying them to the DN Nagar Police Station. I don’t know the details of the charges against me.”

Salman on his part believes that Shera is innocent, as reported Mumbai Mirror.

“They have offered complete support to Shera, who has been working for the family for the last 21 years. He has told the Khans that he wasn’t involved in the brawl, and they have no reason to not believe him,” the Mirror report quoted a source as saying.

You can read a full report of the incident on Firstpost:

Salman Khan’s bodyguard Shera booked on charges of assault; questioned by cops

The case has triggered a huge amount of interest in Shera, who has been Salman Khan’s bodyguard for nearly two decades now. Shera is among the most recognisable faces of an elite breed of personnel who are in charge of the security of top Bollywood stars.

Shera (whose real name is Gurmeet Singh) became the head of Salman’s security detail back in the mid-90s. The Indian Express reports that it was Salman’s brother Sohail Khan who chose Shera, and the superstar and his bodyguard have been inseparable ever since.

The Indian Express report points out that Shera went to the extent of cutting off his hair and giving up his turban (he is Sikh) as it interfered with his work, and has beee known to run for miles ahead of Salman’s car, clearing out crowds, when fan frenzy goes out of hand. Salman on his part, dedicated his film Bodyguard (also starring Kareena Kapoor Khan) to Shera, opting to sport the logo of the latter’s firm — Tiger Security — on his costume despite being offered several lucrative deals to endorse other services.

While Shera is the most famous of the Bollywood bodyguards, there are other faces who are also recognisable, by virtue of being with the stars everywhere they go.

These include:

Mayur Shettigar with Hrithik Roshan. Image from Facebook

Mayur Shettigar — Hrithik Roshan

Mayur Shettigar is the one who protects Hrithik Roshan from overenthusiastic fans. When Hrithik was recently (almost) knocked over by a fan at a multiplex, it was Shettigar who stepped in to prevent the situation from escalating. Apart from his security responsibilities, Shettigar is also a huge champion of Hrithik on social media, and was most recently, enthusiastically sharing the Kaabil trailer with his friends. Shettigar has said that the star treats him like a younger brother.

Yuvraj Ghorpade — Aamir Khan

Yuvraj Ghorpade had a keen interest in bodybuilding even as a teenager, but didn’t foresee a career in it when he finished school. But after joining Ace Secrity, Ghorpade found that he had a all the skills necessary for to be really good at the job. For the past several years now, Ghorpade has been in charge of Aamir Khan’s security detail. It’s a job he enjoys — not least for its substantial prestige value.

“Many of my friends are envious of the fact that I roam with such a big celebrity all the time,” Ghorpade admitted in an interview with The Express Tribune.

Ravi — Shah Rukh Khan; Jitendra Shinde — Amitabh Bachchan

Not much is known about the men who guard Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan; they keep a relatively low profile. Ravi is believed to accompany SRK on all his shoots, whether at home or abroad, while Shinde is among the posse that guards Bachchan Sr whenever he steps out of Jalsa.

Shahid Kapoor with Yusuf Ibrahim. Image from Twitter

Yusuf Ibrahim — Shahid Kapoor, Sunny Leone

Ibrahim doesn’t fit the stereotype of the beefy guard, but he provides security services to stars like Shahid Kapoor, and Sunny Leone.

Ibrahim previously told Mid-Day what his job entailed: “It all depends on the situation we are in. I do my homework before escorting any superstar to a location.

The problem I face is when we exit a venue and travel to an event. Some crazy fans ride their bikes rashly to get a glimpse or take pictures with the star. To control and convince them not to risk their life is a problem.”

Shreysay Thele — Akshay Kumar

Thele doesn’t’ just look after Akshay, he is also in charge of the actor’s son, Aarav’s security. While Thele has been a solid presence by Akshay’s side for several years now, in April 2016, there was a controversy when he punched a fan who got too close to the actor in the quest for a selfie.

Akshay issued an apology on Thele’s behalf, saying to PTI: “What my bodyguard did was wrong. I apologise for that. But sometimes you need to take care of these things because the actors don’t realise… they don’t understand that sometimes they might get injured too.”

The ‘Ek tarfa pyaar ki taaqat’ dialogue in ‘ADHM’ to be mouthed by Shah Rukh Khan?

When the teaser of ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ was out, it was loved by everyone. The most impressive element about the teaser was the dialogue at the end of it – ‘Ek tarfa pyaar ki taaqat hi kuch aur hoti hai… Auron ke rishton ki tarah yeh do logon mein nahi batti… Sirf mera haq hai ispe’.

While in the teaser the dialogue is mouthed by Ranbir, it is said that in the film, it is said by none other than Shah Rukh Khan.

According to an entertainment web portal, the powerful dialogue will be mouthed by SRK in the film. And if sources are to be believed, the way SRK delivers the dialogue, it will make people fall in love and will be the most memorable dialogue.

6 Surprising Psychological Reasons Someone Might Fall In Love With You

You are driving back from work post midnight, your car breaks down and when you get down you see a girl across the road dancing in rain and you fall in love with her. Well, this definitely is straight out of a bollywood flick and doesn’t happen in real life. But, feeling attracted to someone at the very first meet is not uncommon. The answer is simple, it is all related to how your mind works.

Each one of us has got some kind of a check list on what kind of a person we want to meet and then fall in love with. For instance, we would have always wanted a partner who is tall, rich or someone who has a great sense of humour. Some even think of the kind of profession their boyfriend or girl friend should be in. Yes, in some cases, this does work. Some of us do eventually find someone who fits the bill. But in most of the cases, it doesn’t work that way. You fall for what you never imagined at the first place.

For instance, studies say that people are more likely to be attracted to someone who didn’t find them appealing at first but eventually came close to them than someone who always liked them. This was revealed in a 1972 study by Jerome Tognoli and Robert Keisner about the gain-loss theory of attraction. Participants accidentally heard the experimenter describe them in either a positive or negative way. It turned out that participants liked the experimenter far more when they gave them an initially negative rating that later became positive. This shows that people find it more rewarding when they need to win someone over.

Well, there’s no shortage of advice on where to meet the right person, how to approach and how to have a long committed relationship. But many a times, people are attracted to each other for seemingly arbitrary but psychological reasons. Here are some of these reasons why someone would fall in love with you.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH FOOD IN ROME

It’s a small shop on an unremarkable street.

Twirls and swirls of thick white paint flick across the shop window, shadowed by shades of crimson and green. And call me romantic but the words seem to have been written with love.

Baccala e ceci. Il prosciutto del bon Gustaio. Porchetta di Ariccia.

Inside, there’s a queue, also small. It matches the range of products for sale.

Authentic. Small. Elegantly arranged.

Cardboard-boxed pasta curls and red wine line the shelves and the counters reveal rosemary-soaked pizza bianca.

But mostly, it’s all about the porchetta. Salty. Salted. Thickly cut and surprisingly melt in the mouth.

I’m only half way through my food tour of Rome. But while my tastebuds are living in the moment, my mind has gone wandering back through the past.

Travelling Back from Trastevere, Rome

It’s left these narrow streets of “wrong side of the tracks” Trastevere, where green tendrils and scarlet petals spill out from lopsided windows and vespas laze in the shadows.

I’m travelling back through the flavours of my mind to my earlier experiences of Italian Food. To my time in both Tuscany and Umbria, when I learned about the Slow Food Movement and how to make a real ragu.

To my star-crossed love story with the idea of “Italian Food.”

The Love Affair with Italian Food

To say that Italy lavishes care and attention on food is to say that Hollywood quite likes motion pictures.

In Italy, food matters. And as a result, that food tastes great.

But from afar, I think that it’s easy to wonder what all the fuss is about. Elsewhere, especially in Britain, Italian food boils down (often literally) to that which is cheap, plain and easy to make.

It’s student fare with cardboard bases and pasta in stainless steel vats. Food that sold its soul for a side serving of chips or a helping of even soggier peas.

Once I’d returned from my Tuscan sojourn, I was an Italian food convert. To anyone who asked, to anyone who would listen, I extolled the virtues of heading to Italy in search of the food.

Only to see friends return disappointed.

How could this be?

Italian Food: Not Always the Best?

It seems those top tourist spots, the waterways of Venice, those renaissance domes in Florence, have made it easy to have a thoroughly “meh” meal.

Restaurants dial down on quality to drive up numbers served, taking advantage of foreign ignorance to sidestep potential complaints. And even that, perhaps, is unfair.

Perhaps it is the reluctance of foreigners to step into the unknown that drives the restaurateurs to keep things bland, safe and thoroughly tasteless.

So, short on time on my last trip to Rome, I decided to try a different approach.

I signed up for a food tour through Rome run by Eating Italy.

With my wild nights temporarily on hold, I opted for the four hour daylight tour, a voyage through around 20 or so different specialty shops, one open air market and not one but two sit down restaurants with an impromptu gelato and coffee stop thrown in.

It was a blur of gastronomic brilliance, with around ten or so fellow explorers. We saw pecorino cheese stacked waist high and bulbous cheese hanging from the rafters.

We tasted suppli, a deep fried rice ball, on the streets and sugar-dusted pastries indoors.

We sat for wine and pasta, stood for gelato, strolled past pumpkin and prosciutto in the market and slid forks through freshly sliced watermelon

And best of all, the people we met seemed pleased to see us too. Shopkeepers were ready, chefs passionate.

Through pregnancy and a few other issues, my diet was no longer carefree and I’d braced myself to sit on the culinary sidelines as it were.

But the Trasteverini weren’t having any of it.

When it came to gelato, they found me sorbet. For soft, gooey cheese, they substituted hard. Cured meat was swapped with cooked, and cream-laden dessert became so many different types of biscuits and coconut sweets that I struggled to take them all in.

And all without making a fuss, all with making me feel welcome.

Other food tours, which shall remain nameless, have a lot to learn.

I fell in foodie heaven.

A Recommended Food Tour in Rome

So would I recommend Eating Europe and its Eating Italy Daylight Tour through Trastevere to you?

You can bet your last gelato I would. And that I wouldn’t say that lightly.

And when you walk through those leaf-labyrinth streets, stop and have a suppli for me.
