Scoot to start Jaipur-Singapore flight with ‘Kamascootra’ plane

scoot-kr7F--621x414@LiveMintSingapore’s no-frills airline Scoot will launch flight from Jaipur to the city state with a plane—called ‘Kamascootra’—from 2 October as it expands services from the country.

Scoot, an arm of full-service carrier Singapore Airlines, has flights from Chennai and Amritsar. Scoot’s India chief Bharath Mahadevan said the airline will be getting its 12th aircraft, Dreamliner, in the first week of September and it will be named in a unique way.

“To commemorate India services launch, we have decided to call the aircraft ‘Kamascootra’,” he said. “This is the first time that Scoot has named an aircraft in honour of a particular country other than our home base Singapore.”

The name ‘Kamascootra’ is inspired by Vatsyayana’s text ‘Kamasutra’. The “first ever non-stop flight” connecting Jaipur and Singapore will be launched on 2 October, he added. The plane will have 335 seats, including 21 premium economy.

“With Jaipur, we take another step towards the target of steadily increasing our operations in India,” Mahadevan, Scoot’s country head (India), told reporters. There will be three flights every week from Jaipur to Singapore till 29 October and afterwards, the frequency will be increased to four. Scoot operates wide-body aircraft while Tiger Airways flies narrow-body planes. The two carriers were merged into one entity—Budget Aviation Holdings Pte—which is part of Singapore Airlines.

However, Scoot and Tiger Airways continue their services under their own brand names. According to Mahadevan, Scoot and Tiger Airways together will have 50 weekly flights connecting eight destinations with Singapore from 29 Octoberonwards. Scoot began operations in May this year while Tiger Airways has been present in India since 2007.

Yuvraj Singh’s fiancee Hazel Keech accuses Western Union Jaipur of ‘racial discrimination’

story9The adorable lovebirds Yuvraj Singh and Hazel Keech have been topping the headlines for their lovey-dovey pictures on social media platform and of course for their much awaited wedding details. But this time they are in news for a serious reason. There is no tension in their personal lives but this man working for Western Union in Jaipur has left both Yuvraj and Hazel annoyed and the reason will leave you furious. You won’t believe that people are judged even today on grounds of religion. This cash transfer firm Western Union in Jaipur has fallen into major trouble after they denied Yuvraj’s fiancee Hazel money on grounds of religion.

On August 30 Hazel Keech took to the micro-blogging site Twitter and shared a message after Mr. Peeyush Sharma working in Western Union refused to give the actress money because her name didn’t sound ‘Hindu’ enough. This is what she had tweeted, “Mr Peeyush Sharma @WesternUnion in Jaipur is the most racist person ive met and refused to give money because my name is not “Hindu” enough.” She further tweeted, “Im sickened by the attitude of these people,in front of my HINDU mother + my muslim friend @1NS1A #outrage #racism.” Isn’t that bit strange, despite of such reaction the Western Union firm have not yet responded to her neither have they transferred money to the actress. (ALSO READ: Really? Yuvraj Singh and Hazel Keech to tie the knot in December 2016)

To such sickening attitude, Hazel decided to take the matter into her hands and the one who stood by her was her soon-to-be husband Yuvraj Singh. Both Yuvraj and Hazel have demanded legal action against Peeyush Sharma for such ridiculous attitude. The minute Hazel shared her post Yuvraj re-tweeted it and defended his ladylove demanding strict action for such sort of behaviour. “shocking behaviour this is @WesternUnion We all are human beings is that not enough racial discrimination will not be tolerated,” Yuvraj tweeted.

It has been a day and yet there has been no response from the cash transfer firm or any of its authorities. Shame on Western Union and also Mr Peeyush Sharma, your attitude is sickening. On August 24, Western Union had shared a post stating, “Whether you’re on the go or just around the corner, WU has all your money-transfer needs for you and your loved ones.” But we really don’t think that they following the mantra that they themselves have set. Hazel Keech’s need was not fulfilled Western Union.

Coming to Yuvraj Singh and Hazel Keech’s wedding, the duo have not yet revealed the date. But the buzz is the lovely couple would be tying the knot by the end of this year. However, neither Yuvraj nor Hazel has confirmed the dates. Their engagement was a private affair. Yuvraj and Hazel got engaged last year in November. Recently, the two were holidaying in London. They even shared the pictures on social media. The fans are eagerly waiting to know when the wedding bells would be ringing. Keep watching this space for more celebrity updates.

Anushka Sharma: Shah Rukh Khan, Imtiaz Ali great combination for romantic film

117w

Anushka Sharma will be romancing superstar Shah Rukh Khan in her next and the actress says the icing on the cake for her is that it will be helmed by Imtiaz Ali, whose love stories are known to be intense.

While Anushka made her Bollywood debut opposite Shah Rukh in Aditya Chopra’s love story ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’, the 28-year-old actress does not consider it the quintessential romance film.

The pair later worked in late filmmaker Yash Chopra’s ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ but weren’t paired as a couple.

“I had always wanted to do an out-and-out romantic film with Shah Rukh. ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ wasn’t that romantic because for most part of the film I did not know who the guy was! The film with Imtiaz is sweet, happy, romantic,” Anushka told PTI.

The actress says Imtiaz’s understanding of a man-woman relationship combined with Shah Rukh’s charismatic style of romance will be a treat to watch.

“Imtiaz understands man-woman relationship in an intense way. There is a growth in his characters during the course of the film, love teaches them… I think that’s the beauty of his romantic movies. Shah Rukh is the king of romance, he redefined love to an entire generation.

“His intensity as an actor and humility as a person is going to come across on screen. It’s a great opportunity for me to work with the king of romance and a director, whose love stories are always so special and romantic.”

The ‘Tamasha’ director had been long on Anushka’s wishlist, not only, because she likes his work but also as he is probably the reason she became an actress.

The ‘NH 10’ star had no plans of joining the showbiz until she watched Imtiaz’s romantic-comedy “Jab We Met”.

“I had never dreamt of becoming an actress but when I saw ‘Jab We Met’, I was so attracted to the film and to the character that Kareena played. I felt this was cool and something I could do… That happened because it was such a strong character. That’s why Imtiaz is a very special person.”

The duo is currently working on Anushka’s character and the actress says she is impressed by the time and effort the director is giving on developing her role.

“I am doing some readings with Imtiaz right now. He is a very insightful person, he understands his characters so well and I love working on my characters as it gives me a real high. Imtiaz is so involved with me on developing my role, I am very happy. I hope we are able to create something special for the audience.”

The yet-untitled movie will go on floors next month.

aliya

Every actress who enters this exciting world of Bollywood has one wish pinned as she starts working, and that is to be cast opposite Bollywood’s Baadshah, actor Shah Rukh Khan. Well, there is one actress whose wish has certainly been fulfilled. Yes, we are talking about Alia Bhatt who is certainly on cloud nine as she is working with the superstar in Gauri Shinde’s upcoming ‘Dear Zindagi’. Well, Alia is a fan of SRK’s professionalism and can’t stop quipping about it. Talking about it to an agency, Alia Bhatt said, “It was absolutely amazing (experience of working with Shah Rukh). It was such a beautiful experience to work with him. He is so professional.”

“I admire him as a worker so much because he is so good to work with and be around on the sets,” added the ‘Highway’ actress.

Though the first look of ‘Dear Zindagi’ has met with an immensely positive response, the storyline of the movie is still a well-kept secret.

It is slated to release on November 25, 2016.

Pune: State records two per cent jump in SSC supplementary exams passouts

hsc-759Out of 1,42, 968 students who had appeared for the SSC supplementary exams in July-August 2015, 39,994 students passed, converting it into a pass percentage of 27.97 across the state-a two per cent increase as compared to last year’s 25.37 per cent.

In Pune division, out of 20,061 students who had appeared for the exams, 6,204 passed converting it into a pass percentage of 30.83, and thus making a jump of over four per cent compared to last year. The results were declared on Tuesday. The total number of students who got ATKT by failing to clear either one or two papers is 78,153.

This is the second year that the supplementary exams have taken place in July and the results declared by August, thus enabling students not to lose an academic year and instead apply for first year junior college admissions in the same year.

“Students who have cleared all subjects or have ATKT in one or two subjects qualify for FYJC admissions. They can download the online marksheet and self attest it to the online Centralised Admission Process. If they are applying in colleges outside, self attested copies will suffice as well. The deputy director concerned will announce the schedule of admissions based on vacant seats,” said Gangadhar Mhamane, chairman, MSBSHSE.

Meanwhile, students will be allowed to apply for verification of marks between August 31 and September 9. For photocopy of answer sheets, an application can be sent between August 31 and September 19. If students want revaluation of answer sheets, they can apply for the same along with fees within five days of receiving the photocopies,” said an MSBSHSE official.

Students who have failed the exams or applying for class improvement scheme will be allowed to appear for re-exams in March 2017 for which online applications will be accepted and the dates for the same will be announced later.

‘Dishoom’ movie review: John Abraham, Varun Dhawan pack a punch

Directed By: Rohit Dhawan
Produced By: Sajid Nadiadwala, Sunil A Lulla
Cast: John Abraham, Varun Dhawan, Akshaye Khanna, Jacqueline Fernandez
Duration: 2 hours 4 minutes
Bollywood Bubble Rating: ★★★

It has been a while since Bollywood had a buddy-cop film outside of the ‘Dhoom’ franchise, which is now almost wearing out. The best part of director Rohit Dhawan’s latest film is its casting idea – together, John Abraham and Varun Dhawan make an entertaining team. John as the bad cop, and Varun as his funny sidekick on a mission to find India’s missing superstar cricketer, Viraj Sharma (Saqib Saleem) are a delight to watch. Another great thing about ‘Dishoom’ is its runtime – the makers have kept it crisp moving from one highlight to the other. The disclaimer here is that there is no room for any logic whatsoever.

The trailer is an indicator enough as to what’s in store for you in this film, but there’s more to keep you glued to your seats in this masala entertainer. The leading men are seen in their real life personal patterns – John is not known for his effortless acting, and Varun is a motormouth who wears his heart on his sleeves. While John’s persona as Kabir Shergill is grumpy and ruthless, Varun as Junaid Ansari plays the happy-go-lucky fool who has just found his worth. There is not much one can say about this film without giving away spoilers, so here are some things that you will enjoy the most in ‘Dishoom’.

There have been many Hollywood films in this genre, and ‘Dishoom’ is no different – other than the fact that it has been made to suit the Indian sensibilities, and to pay tributes to David Dhawan’s films and pack in some jokes that only Bollywood fans will get. Throughout the film we have a caller, voiced by Satish Kaushik who has been a staple in Sr. Dhawan’s films, who insults Junaid for being ugly, and it makes you laugh. What is commendable is the fact that the maker doesn’t let this joke die a stretched death, there’s a reason it plays out, and it lends to a cliched but satisfying climax that involves a cool cameo.

The screenplay co-credited to director Rohit Dhawan and Tushar Hiranandani is taut, and there is nothing much to complain, but for the fact that there is too much taken for granted. The presence of leading lady, Jacqueline Fernandez who plays the role of Ishika-Parvati-Pakeezah-Meera – she is said to change identities according to her will, and has documents to prove so. Jacqueline is smoking hot, no doubt, but her character’s existence in ‘Dishoom’ is highly questionable. Perhaps the makers just had to have a leading lady to ease out the tough scenario, and add some eye candy to the beefcake.

To conclude, you get what has been promised – loads of action, ample skin show, patriotism, an explosion, chopper chase sequence, and two item numbers. This is one formula that usually doesn’t go wrong, and works well in ‘Dishoom’. Rohit Dhawan is carrying his father’s directorial legacy forward, and knows the right buttons to press, so as to get the laughs at the correct moments. Cinematography by Ayananka Bose is world class, and the editing credited to Nitin Rokade and Ritesh Soni will almost leave you breathless. The songs by Pritam are catchy, and kudos to Rohit for keeping just two in the film.

‘Dishoom’ is a harmless one-time weekend watch, and Varun Dhawan is an actor to watch out for, as he never gets overshadowed by John Abraham’s towering persona. He makes the film work more than anything or anyone else. The scene where he bids good bye to John will leave you moist-eyed. Watch ‘Dishoom’ for Varun, he is a class apart, and is headed for greater glory. Also, wish there was more of Akshaye Khanna.

Emraan Hashmi to host a TV show next?

Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi will soon be seen making his debut on small screen. The actor who has been keeping quite busy this year with his assignments will soon be hosting a show based on Cancer. The reason why the actor was chosen to host this show is due to the fact that his six-year-old son Ayaan was detected with cancer and the actor took a break from work to be by his side while he underwent treatment.

Sources revealed that Emraan Hashmi has been approached to host a TV show that talks about Cancer. The reason the actor was approached to host is that he will be able to give his personal viewpoint on how to deal with it.

Sources added that, “The team behind the show feels that given his personal experience, Emraan not only has the knowledge of coping with this illness but the right sensitivity to talk about the subject and would be an apt candidate to host the show.”

The show will give a detailed information on Cancer and discuss how to deal with the deadly disease. It shall have innumerable doctors and others connected to the subject. Apparently, he is willing to shoot the episodes early next year.

At present Emraan Hashmi is gearing up for the release of his upcoming supernatural thriller ‘Raaz Reboot’ that also stars Kriti Kharbanda and Gaurav Arora. The movie will release on September 16.

Apple iPhone 7 to launch on 7 September: Here’s what to expect at the event

Apple-September-Event-iPhone-7-launch-624x351Finally, it’s official! As expected, Apple has sent out invites for the next high-profile event that will take place on 7 September. It is likely to announce the iPhone 7 or iPhone 6SE or whatever the company plans to call it. Besides, one can also expect an Apple Watch 2 along with a host of other announcements. Apple will be live streaming the event that can bewatched here at 10:30PM IST.

Here’s what to expect:

iPhone 7
The next iPhone is said to come with minimum changes. Rumours have it that the company plans to launch the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, which may sport almost identical design to their predecessor, despite the no ‘s’ year. So far, the highlights of the device are waterproof ability,Force Touch home button and a dual camera setup. The company is also expected to give the audio jack a miss.

Image: 9To5Mac

Image: 9To5Mac

The chipset is expected to be bumped to A10, along with the speculated 3GB RAM. Rumours also point out no home button, which means Apple could be looking at using an ultrasonic fingerprint reader that can read through glass. A home button with Force Touch capabilities would also mean an updated scanning technology from Sonavation, believed to be the only other company that has developed ultrasonic fingerprint reading technologies.

A previous Weibo pricing leak had revealed how finally Apple could do away with the 16GB model, with options like 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. The leak had showed three iPhone 7 models. Going by some previous leaks, the device pre-orders could be scheduled for 9 September and units could hit stores on 23 September.

iPhone 6SE

The latest reports have it that the company plans a new iPhone 6 revamp called iPhone 6SE. This is contradictory to the previous report that said, the iPhone 7 may be launched as the iPhone SE. However, the launch date seems like a giveaway that iPhone 7 is likely yo be the name, and 6SE could be another third model instead of the previously rumoured iPhone 7 Pro.

iphone-7-iphone-7-plus-iphone-7-pro-back

Just like SE was an upgrade to iPhone 5, the 6SE (with probably 3D Touch) could take the features of the iPhone 6 a notch higher for the emerging markets like India and China that seem o have become Apple’s key interest. We’ve already seem images of the 6SE packaging material, something we had also heard from rumours that emerged from supply chain sources.

Furthermore, recent benchmark leaks show a single core score of 3042 and multi-core score of 5210. And these are impressive, considering that the currently available Apple iPhone 6s scores 2,542 in the single core test and 4,427 points in the multi-core benchmark.

Watch 2

Another highlight of the event is likely to be the Watch 2. The company is likely to launch two models of the Watch this year, according to KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Image: Apple

Image: Apple

The new models will bring better waterproofing, along with hardware features such as a GPS, thinner display with One Glass Solution, a barometer and a higher capacity battery life. Similar to the Apple iPhone that will not get a design refresh this year, even the Watch models are expected to come without any cosmetic changes. One of the big rumours ongoing for months was the inclusion of cellular connectivity. However, Apple is said to have tried and failed to implement it successfully as it faced massive battery drain issues. So, the company is now looking for low-power cellular chips for the future devices.

While there is no date set to the long-awaited refresh to the Macbook Pro computers, a new VentureBeat report points out Apple’s plans for a more expansive refresh of the Mac profile, for the iMacs and Macbook Air, is expected sometime in October. However, there is no word if the company will make the announcements at the 7 September event.

Rains pushed Delhi, Gurgaon to first gear, jam engulfed roads got to John Kerry too

auto-strike-4_647_083016083025The US Secretary of State John Kerry had a taste of NCR traffic snarls when his cavalcade got stuck in a water-logged road on way from Indira Gandhi Airport to the city on Monday evening, as rain once again threw the traffic on NH8 out of gear.

Kerry's plane arrived at Delhi airport from Bangladesh at 8 pm as per its schedule arrival. Members of American media travelling with Kerry reported the issues on social media by tweeting pictures of the traffic jam. Senior traffic police officials said the cavalcade did not get stuck in traffic, but only slowed down at a single point.

"We had done all arrangement to keep VIP's passage clear but unfortunately due to heavy rainfall in the city there was high volume of traffic on roads. The cavalcade got slowdown at one point," said Garima Bhatnagar, Joint CP (traffic).

GURGAON WELL HANDLED THIS TIME

The traffic jam, caused mainly by rain showers and poor management, also threw life out gear in Gurgaon for the second time in the season. Water-logging of three to four feet was reported across the city. The worst-affected areas included Hero Honda Chowk, Rajeev Chowk, Signature Tower Chowk, and Sohna road. Vehicles were in queue of two to three kms on these intersections on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

However, the city traffic police was prepared in advance and managed to prevent a July-like jam situation. District police, civic agencies and civil administration came out with better coordination leading no traffic grid lock. TL Satya Prakash, Deputy Commissioner of Gurgaon, said though breakdown of vehicles occurred in large numbers, all civic agencies worked in tandem to avoid a major build up of traffic.

TRAFFIC OFFICIALS HAPPY WITH EFFORTS

"I am personally satisfied with the efforts of more than 300 police personals and officials of civic agencies like MCG and Huda deployed at Hero Honda Chowk to prevent any eventualities," Satya Prakash said. District administration installed 16 water pumps to evacuate water on road. The rainfall started around 3 pm and continued for two hours. Officials said such unprecedented coordination among different agencies was not in place July when the city traffic was halted for over 25 hours.

Traffic jam in July took place due to some vehicles getting struck in deteriorated potholes at these chowks due to under-construction flyover and underpass. Even though internal roads remained water clogged and choked with traffic for long hours, the management at important intersection was better.

New airport to be developed in Goa

shutterstock_349381979-300x200The company that runs Delhi and Hyderabad airports has won the right to develop a new airport in Goa.

GMR Airports was selected to create and operate the new INR30 billion (US$446 million) Mopa Airport on a greenfield site in the state, following a competitive bidding process. It won the bid ahead of Airports Authority of India and a consortium involving South Korean’s Incheon airport group.

GMR, which has also worked on airport projects in Turkey and the Philippines, will have a 40-year concession for the new Goa airport, with a possible 20-year extension. The new hub will help expand the resort enclave’s air capacity; the existing Dabolim Airport handles up to 4.9 million passengers per year, but future expansion is constrained due to military use.

The new airport will be built in four phases, with capacity gradually increasing from 4.4m passengers per year in the first phase to more than 13m by the end of the fourth phase.

The decision to allow GMR to develop Mopa Airport comes more than 15 years after the Indian government originally approved plans for the facility to be built.

Most hybrid vehicles don't make financial sense for buyers

01-2016-toyota-prius-fd-1The premium many people pay for hybrid vehicles relative to similar gas-powered cars is getting more difficult to justify these days, automotive-research firm Vincentric says. Hybrids are becoming less cost-effective relative to gas-powered cars because of lower gas prices and better non-hybrid fuel efficiency. Perhaps that's one reason why hybrid sales are down substantially this year.

Less than one in four hybrids most recently reviewed by Vincentric generated lower ownership costs than their gas-powered counterparts. That's down from 32 percent in 2014 and from 44 percent in 2012. The Audi Q5 Hybrid, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Lexus CT200h, Lexus ES 300h, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, Toyota Avalon Hybrid, and Toyota Prius C were the models Vincentric deemed to have lower operating costs than conventional comparable models.

The narrowing gap is a result of lower gas prices and better overall fuel economy, both of which are great for the general public but not so great for those trying to sell hybrids. US gas prices currently average $2.20 a gallon, down from $2.58 a gallon a year ago, according to AAA. Meanwhile, average new-vehicle fuel economy has been hovering at about 25.5 miles per gallon for the past two years, up from 24.6 mpg for model-year 2014 and from 23.5 mpg for model-year 2013, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

Such factors appear to be impacting hybrid sales in the US. While plug-in vehicle sales through July are up about seven percent from a year earlier, total sales of hybrids, diesels and plug-ins have fallen about 22 percent this year. Notably, sales of four Toyota Prius hybrid variants have collectively declined 26 percent this year.

WhatsApp’s new privacy policy is unfair, but legal

whatsapp-getty-640-624x351WhatsApp has always made huge promises of safeguarding privacy, whether through the introduction of end-to-end encryption or through its promise of no compromise with privacy following its acquisition by Facebook. The sweeping changes to its privacy policy announced yesterday naturally came as a huge shock to its users. The chief changes being made are that WhatsApp will now share customer information with Facebook, in order to provide targeted ads and better friend suggestions, and with other third parties to allow businesses to communicate with users. WhatsApp has given its users a time limit of 30 days to opt-out of the new privacy policy. While the sudden announcement seems like a U-turn on every promise ever made by WhatsApp, the change is unfortunately legal.

WhatsApp can now share all information collected with anyone
Two years ago when WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook, WhatsApp put up a blogpost which assured its users that the acquisition will leave its privacy practices unchanged. WhatsApp’s previous privacy practices were extremely user friendly. Basically the only information that WhatsApp collected was its customers’ contact number, their device information, and the contact numbers on their friends list. The old Privacy Policy made express promises that no information would be shared with anyone else, there would be no third-party ads, and no information shared for commercial or marketing purposes. WhatsApp’s new Privacy Policy now gives a vast list of information which it collects:

  • Your phone number, profile name and photo, online status and status message, last seen status.

  • Your e-mail when you communicate with them for customer service, with no promise that this e-mail address will not be used for any purpose other than for customer service communication.

  • Device data, such as hardware model, operating system information, browser information, IP address, mobile network information including phone number, and device identifiers.

  • Location data.

  • Information on your online status such as when you were last seen online, when you updated your status message, etc.

  • Information from third party services that are integrated with WhatsApp, for example, if you share any article from the web using WhatsApp.

  • Information on who is messaging you, calling you or which groups you belong to.

Under the new Privacy Policy, there is no restriction being placed on what type of information is shared with whom. For example, it is not specified that only contact numbers will be shared with Facebook for the purpose of targeted ads. Any or all the information listed above can be shared not only with Facebook, but also with any other third party.

Yet another change is while the new Privacy Policy keeps the promise of no third party banner ads, it now says that in future if WhatsApp changes its mind, it can have these ads through a change in the privacy policy.

WhatsApp’s changes to privacy maybe unfair, but is legal

While the sweeping changes made to WhatsApp’s privacy policy makes it appear that WhatsApp is deceiving its users, unfortunately, legally, WhatsApp can do this. All it needs to do is inform its customers of the change, and obtain their consent for the same. Had the changes been made without informing the customers or without offering an opt-out mechanism, then WhatsApp would have fallen afoul of privacy legislations. In fact, following Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp in 2014, the US Federal Trade Commission sent a letter to Facebook warning Facebook against making changes to its privacy practices without informing its customers.

Is asking customers to opt-out adequate as consent to the changes?

Obtaining adequate and legal consent of the customers is a very important part of a valid change to privacy practices. All online terms and conditions, as also WhatsApp’s old Privacy Policy, state that changes will be made from time to time to the terms, and your continued use of the app will amount to consent. Usually, users need not even be informed of the changes made. In the case of changes to privacy practices, particularly when your personal information is being transferred to third parties, like WhatsApp is here, the case is different. In such a case, the customer needs to be informed of the change, and must specifically consent to that change.

Opt-out mechanisms, like the kind being offered by WhatsApp now, are highly criticised by privacy advocates as a sufficient form of consent. Most users will not take the trouble to read the terms and conditions or understand that unchecking that box can get them better privacy. But sadly, while the opt-out mechanism is only criticised, it is a perfectly legal and valid form of consent. That means that if you do not opt-out on time, you cannot later say that WhatsApp did not inform you adequately or that you did not know you had to opt-out of it.

Why didn’t WhatsApp adequately inform users of the change?

The only questionable part of WhatsApp’s changes is whether it adequately informed its customers about the changes. When WhatsApp introduced end-to-end encryption, every user was informed of this change on their chat screens. Surprisingly, now when a change of this scale has been made to its privacy practices, there is no similar notice on the chat screens. The only source of information is the blogpost, and it is questionable how many WhatsApp users actually take the trouble to check WhatsAp’s blogs. The blogpost itself outlines only some of the changes being made.  It doesn’t inform customers of the extent of the changes being made. The new Privacy Policy, which WhatsApp claims has been written to make it easier for the people to understand, is actually even more confusing to understand, and leaves vast scope for misinterpretation and misuse.

Resolving this flaw in WhatsApp’s approach, however, may not end the problem for customers. Legally, there is no set standard on when customers are considered to have been informed adequately. If legal bodies like the FTC find fault with this, it can easily be remedied by adequate notices, say on every customer’s chat screens, and a better drafted Privacy Policy. But apart from that, there is nothing much to stop WhatsApp from making these changes. The only thing that can actually stop WhatsApp and Facebook from doing this is a massive public protest. So if you don’t agree with the changes to WhatsApp, speak out against it. Public pressure had successfully forced Facebook to adopt better privacy practices in the past, and has the power to do so again.

Studies have shown that dogs as pets help us lead happier and healthier life and this Friday, dog owners will get an opportunity to show their pets what he or she means to them.

National Dog Day was founded in 2004 when pet and family lifestyle expert and animal advocate Colleen Paige decided to set aside a specific day to encourage adoption and bring more attention to the plight of animals. The significance of Aug. 26 is that it was on this date that Paige's family adopted their first dog named Sheltie when she was just 10 years old

To celebrate this day, we have compiled a list of documentaries on Netflix that will cater to not just dog lovers, but all animal lovers.

The Champions: This is an inspirational story about the pitbulls that were rescued from the brutal fighting ring of former Atlanta Falcon star quarterback Michael Vick. This documentary is by Darcy Dennett and it highlights the significance of the relationship between humans and animals.

World's oddest animal couples: This documentary explores the weirdest and cutest friendships between different species of animals. This documentary will see Dr. Carin Bondar introducing several unusual animal friendships such as an elephant leading a buffalo herd, a jackal caring for an elderly dog.

72 Cutest Animals: This documentary is an investigation into what makes an animal cute, and dogs are sure to feature in this documentary series. "With explanatory graphics and firsthand accounts from animal lovers and experts, each creature is fully assessed on its cuteness and ranked on a sliding scale to eventually uncover the cutest one in the world," the synopsis reads.

Noida: 10 ‘fever’ deaths in two weeks shakes Gautam Buddha Nagar area, inquiry ordered

fever-death-noida-759
Within a 2-km radius of Sarfabad village in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, at least 10 people have died in a span of two weeks. According to locals and relatives of the deceased, the only common symptoms all of them had were fever and body ache. The district administration set up an inquiry to ascertain the cause of deaths.

“An audit to look into these deaths… Data regarding development of the said symptoms, medical treatment sought, pathological analysis, the cause of death among others will be procured and analysed,” said N P Singh, District Magistrate, Gautam Buddha Nagar.

Of the 10 deaths in the village, the administration has been able to procure information in four cases.

Jai Deepak Verma, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), said, “In one case, the cause of death is pancreatitis, in another it is mouth cancer, in the third case it is heart attack, and liver failure in the fourth case. Our team is in the process of getting information about the medical history of each person. Blood samples have been collected and other tests are going to be conducted.”

On Wednesday evening, a meeting of senior health officials and members of the district administration was called to assess the situation in Sarfabad and the measures needed to prevent such cases. At the village, on Wednesday afternoon, locals claimed the deaths took place following a short bout of fever and body ache.

“Between August 11 and 24, nearly 10 people died in the village. All of them had fever for less than four to five days. Some complained of extreme exhaustion, muscular pain while others had complained of chest pain, stomach pain, shortness of breath and restlessness. Most of them took medicines from local doctors and chemists,” said Rinku Yadav, whose father died after showing similar symptoms.

Rinku’s father, Pitam Yadav (59), had complained of difficulty in breathing and restlessness on August 15 morning. He was rushed to hospital and admitted to the ICU. Within one hour, his situation worsened. “A day earlier, he had said he was suffering from slight fever and exhaustion. At Kailash Hospital, his heart condition deteriorated steadily. They were arranging a ventilator for him when he passed away,” said Rinku.

Less than 2 km away from Yadav’s house, Vipin Sharma (21) died within 24 hours of running a fever. “On August 15, he had slight fever. He took some medication for it. He had gone to a local chemist and bought the medicine himself. The next day, he was sipping tea when he fell and died. We came to know later that he had called a cousin at night and complained of slight chest pain,” said Sharma’s uncle, Prem Chand.

Senior doctors maintained that with medical information of these cases still being accumulated, these deaths could not be clubbed together. “We do not know the reality of those cases. It seems likely that medical attention was sought locally. Data is being collected at the CMO office. I have come across medical data relating to two of these cases. A 22-year-old man had fever for four to five days. At the time of his admission to Kailash Hospital, he seems have suffered from dengue septic syndrome — his urine output had decreased, platelet count was low and kidney was not functioning properly. It is likely that problems developed in the kidney due to dengue and it led to multi-organ failure,” said Dr A K Agarwal, President, IMA (Noida chapter).

“Another case shows acute pancreatitis as the cause of death. Since information of the other cases is being accumulated, it is difficult to club these deaths together,” he said.

Researchers warn that technology is unreliable during natural disaster

Disaster-and-Technology-624x351Newfound enthusiasm for the latest technologies, such as drones and smartphones, to improve the way aid is provided to people in disasters may be overblown, experts warned on Thursday. The annual World Risk Report from the United Nations University (UNU) highlights the growing interest in new technologies to improve emergency response – from drones that can survey crisis-hit areas to social media networks that allow survivors to communicate with the wider world.

These can provide important information to the logisticians who organise aid delivery or health workers trying to track deadly diseases like Ebola in no-go areas, the report said. But Matthiasƒ Garschagen, a risk management expert with the UNU Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), said it could not substitute for the basic infrastructure some countries have lacked for decades.

“Too many people see technology as the main panacea for solving all the problems you have after disasters strike,” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “A lot of development experts put too much emphasis on technology.” In Africa, for example, there are just 65 kilometres (40 miles) of paved road per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 832 km in Europe or 552 km in the Americas.

In heavy rain, dirt roads soon become impassable, which hampers the delivery of aid, the report said. “No smartphones in the world are going to significantly change this state of affairs,” Garschagen said in the report produced with the University of Stuttgart and Bündnis Entwicklung Hilft, an alliance of German aid agencies.

After the Nepal earthquakes last year, aid agencies used drones to find out the extent of damage, but their uncontrolled flying was a headache for the government, which introduced restrictions. And in many cases, helicopters were not available to bring in aid to meet the needs identified by aerial surveillance.

Drones themselves cannot be expected to carry out aid deliveries any time soon, because they cannot carry big enough loads and their use is subject to so many rules, said Kathrin Mohr, who heads Deutsche Post DHL Group’s “GoHelp” team. “Some suggest that drones could even carry medicine supplies to remote villages. I think this is complete nonsense,” she said in the report. “Just realise what one of these drones can carry: Not more than one to three kilogrammes. This really is an extremely limited amount.”

Garschagen said sound infrastructure – from transport to telecoms and power networks – must be built with disaster risks in mind and properly maintained. An early warning system, installed in Indonesia after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, malfunctioned in October 2010 when a 3-metre (10 ft) wave crashed into the remote Mentawai islands, taking residents by surprise and killing several hundred people.

“Too often we think infrastructure means building a nice road, a nice bridge or a tsunami early warning system,” Garschagen said. “But we don’t pay sufficient attention to the humans and institutions that need to be trained, educated and built around the technology in order to maintain or run it properly.”

Planners and builders of infrastructure – whether companies, governments or development banks – should also consider the risks from climate change, such as worsening floods, he added. That is particularly so in Southeast Asia and Africa, where much essential infrastructure is not yet in place, he said.

But pressure from investors in growing cities like Lagos or Ho Chi Minh City can make it difficult to think long term, raising the risk of buildings or transport being located in disaster-prone areas. An index ranking the risk of disasters for 171 countries, contained in the report, shows the world’s hot-spots lie in the Pacific Ocean, Southeast Asia, Central America and Africa’s southern Sahel region.

New Elantra to help Hyundai consolidate market

NewHyundai Motor India has launched the sixth generation version of its sedan Elantra, in both Petrol and Diesel versions, priced at between Rs 13.22 lakh to Rs 19.53 lakh (ex-showroom Chennai). The introductory prices, which vary according to region, will be valid up to December 2016.

Hyundai hopes to use the model to further consolidate its position in the country and in the sedan segment in particular.

“We already have attained significant market share in the SUV segment. With Elantra we will further strengthen our market share in the country,” said Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO YK Koo adding that in order to achieve market leadership in India, Hyundai would introduce two advanced products every year. Hyundai currently has a market share of 17.1 per cent of the Indian passenger vehicle segment and India contributes 13 per cent of its total global sales.

The Elantra is the sixth reboot of the sedan, with previous models having sold a total of 11.5 million units  globally since its launch in 1990. Hyundai is hoping that the new model would help it gain a leadership position in the executive sedan segment, which currently sees around 1,000 units sold a month from six brands..

“We were selling 250 units of Elantra a month so far, and now with the all new version, we expect to sell around 350 units a month,” said Koo.

What our favorite actors looked like in their first films compared to now

3136005-TEST4-650-b4e0b897a1-1470403881If we were asked to explain what an actor looked like in their first film, most of us would probably recall them as they were in one of their most prominent early roles. Leonardo DiCaprio is best remembered for his role in Titanic; Arnold Schwarzenegger will always be the Terminator; Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark from Iron Man.

But it’s often the case that an actor’s first famous performance was not, in fact, their first time ever on screen. Take a look at the following selection of photographs that compares how some of today’s most well-known stars looked the first time they stepped in front of a camera with their most recent performance. We at Bright Side were certainly surprised!

US divorce sinks Welspun m-cap by 2,000 crore

make_2557510fTextile exporter Welspun India lost 2,000 crore in market capitalisation on Monday after US-based Target Corporation, one of its biggest customers, severed ties following a cotton supply dispute.

The stock was locked in the lower circuit after plunging 20 per cent to 82 on Monday.

Target said an extensive investigation had confirmed that Welspun, which claimed to have supplied bedsheets and pillowcases made of Egyptian cotton, had in fact substituted it with different material between August 2014 and July 2016.

Target has pulled out all Welspun products from its stores and portal target.com, the company said in a release. “We have informed Welspun that, due to this conduct, we are in the process of terminating our relationship with them,” it added.

Welspun admitted to lapses at its end. Two-thirds of the company’s business come from the US.

In a conference call with analysts, the company said it outsources the procurement of cotton and cotton yarn, and is hence conducting an audit on its entire supply chain. The audit, to be completed in 6-8 weeks, would provide clarity on gaps in the system, it said.

Welspun refused comment on why Target’s action had taken two years.

Of its total revenue from Target of $90 million (₹600 crore) in FY16, the specific rejected product revenue accounts for about $8.5 million (₹57 crore). The company has bagged orders worth $4.5 million (₹30 crore) from Target this fiscal, for which it is yet to start supply, Welspun said.

The shipment of similar products to other customers accounts for 3-6 per cent of the total revenue. “In our opinion, the whole incident could lead to de-rating of the stock. Also, there could be downward revision of earnings,” said an analyst.

Rio Olympics 2016: Sensors at full play

rio_mobile_journalism-624x351Rio 2016 is the most data-intensive Games till date. Every facet of it depended, to a certain extent, on capture of data. Sensors, heart rate monitors, and GPS trackers are just a few technologies used heavily. Users have been able to monitor performance, recall earlier results, and view the results in real time with the click of a button. With the intensive use of modern technology such as Big Data and Analytics, the use and application of sensors has increased manifold. Sensors are helping bring about more accurate results as well as monitor factors such as an athlete’s health, impact of environment on events, among other things.

“As the scope of Big Data Analytics increases more and more sensors would be required to collect the data,” said Shashank Dixit, CEO, Deskera, a leading Cloud-based software provider that has recently launched its own Big Data product.

Big Data goes big at Rio 2016
Brazilian Canoe Federation has leveraged Big Data; sensors were installed in canoes and on athletes to gather data on performance and canoes. The heart monitor sends information via Bluetooth to sensors located in canoe. Together with an accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer and GPS, sensors have been able to measure the frequency and intensity of rowing and detect location, speed and direction of boat.

“All the information collected is transmitted to a host system that operates in the cloud on GE’s Industrial Internet platform,” Alfredo Mello, commercial head at GE for Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympic Games, said in an interview.

Similarly, the British rowing team has invested heavily in data analytics to measure and analyze all relevant data that can have a bearing on actual performance — from on-water training to gym sessions. Sensors have also been used to determine results with accuracy and have also been used to record the position of athletes; for example, location of athletes in road cycling events has been picked up by GPS sensors which send real-time data to reporters. Monitoring and analysis through sensors also improves technical and physical performance of athletes.

Not surprisingly, around 20% of the $2.25 billion budget of Rio Olympics was allocated to implement information technology and telecommunication. As many as 250 companies, including Cisco, Atos, América Móvil, Samsung, EMC, Omega, Panasonic, and Symantec, have provided technology to build the infrastructure.

“Evolving technology and software opens many possibilities for timekeeping and data handling. We are discovering many new ways to benefit athletes, judges and even spectators,” said Omega CEO Alain Zobrist in an interview.

With the increase in the reach and impact of Big Data in Rio 2016 and the projected expansion of Internet of Things and machine-to-machine communication in the coming Olympics, the scope and use of sensors is set to grow exponentially!
