Rains pushed Delhi, Gurgaon to first gear, jam engulfed roads got to John Kerry too

auto-strike-4_647_083016083025The US Secretary of State John Kerry had a taste of NCR traffic snarls when his cavalcade got stuck in a water-logged road on way from Indira Gandhi Airport to the city on Monday evening, as rain once again threw the traffic on NH8 out of gear.

Kerry's plane arrived at Delhi airport from Bangladesh at 8 pm as per its schedule arrival. Members of American media travelling with Kerry reported the issues on social media by tweeting pictures of the traffic jam. Senior traffic police officials said the cavalcade did not get stuck in traffic, but only slowed down at a single point.

"We had done all arrangement to keep VIP's passage clear but unfortunately due to heavy rainfall in the city there was high volume of traffic on roads. The cavalcade got slowdown at one point," said Garima Bhatnagar, Joint CP (traffic).

GURGAON WELL HANDLED THIS TIME

The traffic jam, caused mainly by rain showers and poor management, also threw life out gear in Gurgaon for the second time in the season. Water-logging of three to four feet was reported across the city. The worst-affected areas included Hero Honda Chowk, Rajeev Chowk, Signature Tower Chowk, and Sohna road. Vehicles were in queue of two to three kms on these intersections on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

However, the city traffic police was prepared in advance and managed to prevent a July-like jam situation. District police, civic agencies and civil administration came out with better coordination leading no traffic grid lock. TL Satya Prakash, Deputy Commissioner of Gurgaon, said though breakdown of vehicles occurred in large numbers, all civic agencies worked in tandem to avoid a major build up of traffic.

TRAFFIC OFFICIALS HAPPY WITH EFFORTS

"I am personally satisfied with the efforts of more than 300 police personals and officials of civic agencies like MCG and Huda deployed at Hero Honda Chowk to prevent any eventualities," Satya Prakash said. District administration installed 16 water pumps to evacuate water on road. The rainfall started around 3 pm and continued for two hours. Officials said such unprecedented coordination among different agencies was not in place July when the city traffic was halted for over 25 hours.

Traffic jam in July took place due to some vehicles getting struck in deteriorated potholes at these chowks due to under-construction flyover and underpass. Even though internal roads remained water clogged and choked with traffic for long hours, the management at important intersection was better.
