Why you need a content style guide (built into your CMS)

A passage from Tony Haile’s recent “The Facebook papers Part 4: What’s a publisher to do?” conveys the power content can have:

The value of a media company will be predominantly tied up in its brand; the amount of incremental revenue or reach that content can derive from being associated with that company. This will not depend upon another layout redesign or logo refresh. When content is atomized and accessed far from the publisher’s site, the content itself must act as an expression of brand. Its style must be a fingerprint, an instantly recognizable promise of quality that can inform, inspire or engage.

Today, almost every brand is a “media company.” Because we crank out blog posts and infographics, videos and whitepapers. Because we publish ebooks, webinars, and podcasts. We’re all publishers now, and we always have been.

Content has come into its own as a brand’s foremost missionary. Each day, it embarks into a wild world far beyond the safely branded spaces of our own designs to spread the word — sometimes even without a logo or a backlink to let people know who made it. Which means that, in a world where people may not encounter our content within our “owned” ecosystems, design can’t save the day.

Let me repeat that: Design will not carry your brand in this “omnichannel” age. Content will.

To ensure it continues to derive (and drive) “incremental revenue or reach” from its publishing brand, our content needs to bear our brand’s indelible mark as surely as any design element or website does.

Which means 3 things:

1. Your brand needs a content style


2. That style needs to be documented in a format your whole team can easily access


3. Adherence to the style guide needs to be automated as much as possible

Hopefully, points 1 and 2 are clear from the above. But as for point 3 …

Why you need to automate content style adherence

The one question people inevitably ask those who build style guides is: “Great. Now how do you enforce it?” And it’s a good question. After all, when you’re hustling to publish your latest blog, build out your help center, and get that landing page live, like, yesterday, who has time to check the style guide?

The traditional answer is: that’s why you have editors.

And yes, you absolutely should have paid, professional editors on staff (or at least freelancing). Or at least somebody who can tell a gerund from an infinitive. I can’t stress that enough.

But editors aren’t enough. Because when a horde of team members count content production as one of their duties, one or even a handful of editors will struggle to keep up. You need to make their lives easier — and help ensure brand consistency in content — by giving everyone the means to follow the style guide.

And then you take it a step further by integrating your style guide right into your CMS, so your team doesn’t even need to check the style guide. It checks your team for them.

How to incorporate your content style into your CMS

Autmoate your CMS for uniform content

Before we dive in too deep, keep in mind that how much of your style guide can be worked into your CMS depends on the system you use and how customizable it is.

With that in mind, here are a few system-agnostic suggestions for automating your style guide:

• Create highly structured content types. For example, almost every listicle post follows a subheading + image + body copy formula. Make sure the content structure follows that pattern, then let CMS users reproduce these fields as many times as they need.


• Include guidance text directly from the style guide for all CMS fields,especially for freeform inputs like rich text fields and images


• Add brand-specific grammar and spelling prompts to the CMS. If you use the Oxford comma, the CMS should tell writers when they forgot it. If you always cap a product name, include that in a custom dictionary. 


• Give CMS users fields for meta title, description, and OG data (or map fields that display on-page to these off-page meta details) and include brand guidelines for these items in the help text.


• Set character limits on post titles and metadata to ensure they’re the right length. For titles, make sure to subtract the domain name and any separating characters if you use these.


• Set dimension and filesize limits on images


• Require alt tags for images

Content styles that build brands

Not convinced content can build your brand — and a significant audience? Here are just a few examples of (often, highly structured and “branded”) content that has moved far beyond the publishing brands’ “owned” properties:

Buzzfeed listicles

Love it or loathe it, you can’t deny that Buzzfeed built its whole brand on a particular type of structured content. Just say “listicle” in a word association game, and the answer will inevitably be Buzzfeed.

And yes, this format has proven a bit divisive. Many content strategists and marketers have even come to hate the term. But the reality is that most strong brands are divisive — the controversy itself exemplifies the brand’s power and relevance.

Tasty short videos

Not everybody loves a listicle. This wildly popular series of short videos has brought another vast audience flocking to Buzzfeed’s content. Each and every video follows what is obviously a very specific set of stylistic guidelines, so the moment you see a Tasty video, you know it.

Interviews have long engaged readers, and the designer interview has practically become its own subgenre — in part due to InVision’s long-running series. It’s branded with an immediately recognizable name, and even though each article serves to advertise the product, they’re also very interesting, offering tantalizing glimpses into how design works across the tech world, and beyond.

All ingredients of a great style guide, carefully and consistently applied and adhered to.

So if your team is in the midst of building a new style guide, or is in charge of maintaining an existing one, be sure to 1) include content guidelines and 2) incorporate them into your CMS!

Apple iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus India prices for all variants revealed

Apple launched the iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus models recently, which are slated to go up on sale in India on 7 October. Though we got the India launch date (though, a month away), Apple left us all hanging by revealing only the starting price of Rs 60,000. However, the company has now revealed the prices for all variants.

The 32GB, 128GB and 256GB variants of the  iPhone 7 are priced at Rs 60,000, Rs 70,000 and Rs 80,000, respectively. The bigger iPhone 7 Plus models are priced at Rs 72,000 for 32GB, Rs 82,000 for 128GB, and Rs 92,000 for 256GB.

Meanwhile, the Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus receive a price cut of up to Rs 22,000. The 128GB iPhone 6 is priced at Rs 60,000 and 128GB iPhone 6s Plus at Rs 70,000.

If you take a closer look at the prices, the iPhone 7 models carry prices similar to the iPhone 6s Plus. Both offer 32GB and 128GB variants at same prices. With this, Apple wants to ensure that users opting for iPhone 6s Plus, would rather pick the iPhone 7. The company has started taking measures to ensure India, that Tim Cook called one of its fastest growing markets, has enough reasons to pick the newer models.

In the ‘lower price’ range, the company has placed the iPhone SE – 16GB at Rs 39,000 and 64GB at Rs 44,000.

Though there is no word yet, we can expect the company to announce buyback offers soon, as seen in the past couple of years. With the exchange offer, the price to own a device go down further. Deepika Padukone to perform Ghoomer in 'Padmavati'?

New Delhi: One of the most graceful actresses in recent years, Deepika Padukone is all set to return as 'Padmavati' in maverick filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's yet another period drama.

The film has been in the news ever since it was announced. Firstly, much speculation related to the star cast of the film refused to die down and now the buzz is that Dippy darling will be seen performing a Rajasthani folk dance Ghoomer in the film.

According to Mumbai Mirror, SLB is setting up a grand set in Mumbai's Mehboob Studios, where the film will be shot. Ashok Leyland stock dips over 3% on news of merger with Hinduja Foundries

Ashok Leyland's decision to merge the loss making Hinduja Foundries Ltd with the company was not received well by the investors. Company's stock dropped by 3.43 per cent to Rs 81.65 in BSE on Thursday morning.

On September 14, company stock closed at Rs 84.55 a share, up by 1.26 per cent.

Late Wednesday night, Ashok Leyland said that it got Board's approval for its proposal amalgamating Hinduja Foundries Limited (HFL), a Hinduja Group company withAshok Leyland Limited (AL), subject to various regulatory approval and approval of shareholders of both the companies.

Ashok Leyland management did not respond to Business Standard's request for a comment on the logic behind the merger. Meanwhile market experts fear that this will eat into Ashok Leyland's cash.

A senior analyst who tracks the company said that its a bad deal for Ashok Leyland since HFL is a loss making company and consistently for the last five years it has been reporting loss.

In 2015-16, Hinduja Foundries loss was Rs 394.25 crore as compared to Rs 262.44 crore, a year ago.

During the same period, Ashok Leyland reported profits of Rs 721.78 crore and Rs 334.81 crore respectively.

Meanwhile Hinduja Foundries said that D M Reddy is appointed as the managing director of the company.

"The Company continued to face numerous challenges due to negative growth of the OEM market for some period, uncertain power scenario and sharp decline in the price of end products. The Sriperumbudur Unit (SPU) ramp-up with debottlenecking of capacity constraints and stabilisation of production processes was slowed down," said HFL.

Besides, HFL is sitting on a debt of around Rs 460 crore, which will now come in Ashok Leyland's book and it needs to be serviced. The other negative factor is that this deal also means three per cent dilution of equity for Ashok Leyland and all the capex and funds for operations need to be funded by Ashok Leyland.

Vinod K Dasari, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Ashok Leyland in a statement on Wednesday late evening said that the amalgamation will result in operational efficiencies and help realise significant cost synergies.

"We are confident that the roll out of the best practices of Ashok Leyland Limited will benefit Hinduja Foundries Limited. While it is a critical supplier to Ashok Leyland Limited will continue its focus to grow its relationships with other customers".

He added, in fact the new arrangement will help in providing a wider range of solutions to them. There is so much more Hinduja Foundries can do under the new arrangement.

Fatal Tesla crash in China may have involved Autopilot

Another fatal Tesla Model S crash is under investigation, this time in China. Reports are now surfacing of a Model S driver who was tragically killed when his car hit a street sweeping vehicle on the side of a highway in the province of Hebei. The family of 23-year-old Gao Yaning reportedly sued Tesla over the incident, saying that Autopilot failed to prevent the accident.

But was Autopilot engaged? "Because of the damage caused by the collision, the car was physically incapable of transmitting log data to our servers and we therefore have no way of knowing whether or not Autopilot was engaged at the time of the crash," Tesla said in a statement. The automaker maintains that it has "repeatedly" tried to work with Gao's father — the owner of the car — to investigate the crash, "but he has not provided us with any additional information that would allow us to do so."

Dashcam footage (which can be seen in the video above about 35 seconds in) shows that the Model S did not appear to slow down or attempt to avoid the vehicle in the moments before the crash. The truck was partially in the lane in which Gao was driving on the left side of the road at the time.

Tesla's owner's manual warns that its system cannot detect and react to all stationary objects or vehicles in its path, and warns drivers to "Always pay attention to the road ahead and stay prepared to take immediate corrective action." Tesla also recently updated its Chinese website regarding Autopilot after a previously reported crash in China. Regardless of responsibility, this incident is sure to raise more questions about the safety of Tesla's Autopilot system, as well as autonomous driving as a whole.

In the only other known fatality involved with Autopilot, Joshua Brown died in a crash in Model S in Florida in May.

I took my first ride in an autonomous car and it was weird

At a recent press event focused on industry trends, Ford offered the opportunity to ride in one of the automaker's autonomous Fusions. As someone who had never ridden in a self-driving car before, I was expecting a strange experience. I was right, just not in the way I expected.

Naturally, I've spent my entire automotive life in cars driven by humans, whether myself or someone else. I knew that it would be freaky and disconcerting to ride in a vehicle that is steering, accelerating and braking on its own. I even prepared to feel a little nauseous, in part because unlike a human driver, an autonomous car doesn't really telegraph its moves, so you don't know exactly how the car will act.

That's what I was expecting when I hopped in the back of an autonomous Fusion with one of our video producers. In the front seats were two Ford engineers who would tell us about how the technology worked and keep an eye on things in case something went wrong. The drive took us around the Ford development campus featuring roads with actual signs, lane markings and real traffic. We never got above the speed limit of 25 miles per hour, but the trip was enough to demonstrate how the car recognizes signs, signals, pedestrians, and other traffic. We even had a chance to witness the vehicle wait for an unexpected pedestrian at a crosswalk.



During the ride, it was easy to forget that the car was driving itself. The machine drives more timid than most drivers, which the engineers explained was on purpose, but all of its inputs felt very natural. It executed turns smoothly, even during left turns against traffic. Every time the vehicle accelerated from a stop or started braking for another, it acted with enough urgency that it didn't feel slow, but never so abruptly that it wasn't smooth. The driverless system also maintained its lane position very well, never getting too close to either side, and never bouncing between sides. Mostly the experience just felt like a human driver was at the controls.

Would it have been a more conventionally bizarre experience if there wasn't anyone sitting at the wheel, or if I were sitting at the wheel? Perhaps. If that were the case, it would be more obvious what was happening and I might be fighting the instinct to intervene. But even then, I think I would get used to the feeling far quicker than I previously would've imagined.

And that's what was so weird. The whole experience was so mundane, I felt comfortable with it almost immediately. I never gasped and shouted as the car started turning by itself. I never felt sick starting and stopping. This huge technical feat felt amazingly similar to an average taxi ride. And that might be the highest praise an autonomous vehicle could get. The more normal autonomous cars feel, the more quickly people will get over their fears.

Ford plans to have the first road-ready self-driving cars available to car- and ride-sharing services in 2021 with consumer versions to follow. Considering how far Ford has come, that target seems plausible. It could be the start of the autonomouous age.

Stolen semi truck currently racing through the desert

A man stole a semi truck Tuesday morning and is currently racing through the California desert while driving fairly politely. The chase began in Apple Valley, California, San Bernardino County officials told ABC 7.The driver failed to yield, leading to the chase. ABC 7 reported that the driver told police he has no weapons, but does not want to return to jail.

He's currently racing through a barren part of southern California through Yucca Valley. The truck belongs to ACT Enviro, a company that handles hazardous waste. ACT Enviro did not say what the truck is hauling. Possible hazards inside could be chemical, biological or radioactive, according to Fox 10. People around the world are watching streaming footage of the chase.

The truck is estimated to have between 12 and 14 hours of drive time. People are now lining the streets to watch as the chase. The unnamed driver seems to be heading toward Arizona. We'll update this post as the chase unfolds.

There are now over 500,000 plug-in vehicles in the US

Every electric vehicle counts. At least, it does to the people at Plug In America, who recently calculated the number of plug-in vehicles of any type that have been sold in the US. Turns out, during this sixth annual*National Drive Electric Week, we've hit a numerical milestone. Over 500,000 plug-in electric vehicles have been bought in the US so far. The daily tracker says that the current number is 502,093.

Obviously, most of these have been sold since 2010, but Plug In America, as many of you probably know, has been involved with electric vehicles since the EV1 days, which was back in the early '90s. PIA says that the "rapid growth" it's been tracking is helped by the fact that are "more than two dozen vehicles are now commercially available in the United States." Of course, many of those are only available in places like California, but progress is progress.

National Drive Electric Week continues this year until September 10-18 and includes events in around 200 cities and is organized by Plug in America, the Sierra Club, and the Electric Auto Association as well as local partners.

Chevy Bolt EV comes cruising with 238 miles of range

The impending release of the Tesla Model 3 in 2017 or so garnered huge headlines earlier this year for three reasons: it will cost $35,000 before incentives, it has 215 miles of range, and it's a Tesla. One of the challenges the Model 3 faces is that it will be beat to market by theChevy Bolt EV. We just learned that the Bolt will trounce the Model 3 in at least one other aspect: the Chevy's official range will be 238 miles.

That's according to the expected EPA numbers that Chevy released today, ahead of the car's availability at dealers in late 2016. What's perhaps most impressive is that 238 miles is almost three times the range of GM's previous all-electric vehicle, the Chevy Spark EV. That little car could only go 82 miles on a single charge of its 19-kWh battery pack. The tripling isn't a huge surprise, given the Bolt EV's 60-kWh pack.

Chevy is promoting the new Bolt EV – along with the Volt plug-in hybrid and the Malibu Hybrid – over at the brand's new website, ChevyEVlife. Chevy hasn't announced the price of the Bolt EV yet, but says that it is expected to be "below $37,500." So, which one is most tempting to you at this point?

Picture Perfect! Deepika Padukone and Vin Diesel rock the desi avatar

Deepika Padukone will be seen opposite Vin Diesel in ‘xXx: Return of Xander Cage’. The actress’ character in the film is named as Serena Unger which doesn’t really look like an Indian name. However, recently designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, posted a picture of Deepika and Vin on his Instagram account, in which both the actors are seen wearing Indian outfits.

How Bristol Motor Speedway was turned into a football stadium

When the University of Tennessee Volunteers line up to play football versus the Virginia Tech Hokies around 8 pm Eastern this evening, they'll be doing so in front of the largest live crowd in NCAA history. The game is taking place at Bristol Motor Speedway, which normally hostsNASCAR racing events. We won't know exactly how many attendees there will be until the game actually kicks off, but the final tally could crest 150,000 (that's the total number of permanent seats at the Speedway). The current record of 115,109 was set in 2013 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.

Needless to say, a lot of work is involved in turning a race track into a college football venue. In addition to the installation of a proper football field, which we're sure was no small feat itself, there's a 700-ton, custom-made video board called Colossus suspended over the turf to make sure every single attendee has a good view of the action below. Oh, and don't forget the 540,000-watt audio system, either.

So, how did it all go down? Check out the video above for a timelapse of the stadium conversion. And in case you're wondering: yes, a team of auditors from The Guinness Book of World Records will be there to officially certify the attendance numbers.

Baar Baar Dekho movie review: Sidharth-Katrina's film has guesswork at its core

Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra's Baar Baar Dekho is in screens today. Directed by Nitya Mehra, the film is touted as a high-concept love story. Here's our Baar Baar Dekho movie review.

Good-looking places, good-looking people, good-looking everything else. If there is one thing Nitya Mehra's Baar Baar Dekho gets right, it is how to exploit everything good-looking in the vicinity. For most part of the songs, that falls on Katrina Kaif's abs - the most-talked-about part of the film as of now.

Jai (Sidharth) and Diya (Katrina) are childhood friends who are in love with each other. Jai is a Mathematics professor in Delhi and Diya is an artist. When Diya proposes marriage to a commitment-phobic Jai who wants to move to Cambridge and teach there, the discussion somehow reaches Diya's father (Ram Kapoor).

 

The night before their wedding, Diya and Jai have a fight and the girl leaves, saying she was never coming back. Jai makes the most of the bottle of champagne at hand and drifts off to sleep. Only to wake up next to Diya on his honeymoon, in Thailand. He finds out he's been married for ten days, but has no recollection whatsoever of the last ten days.

Every time Jai goes to sleep, he wakes up in a different year, a different time and place. He doesn't know what is happening to him. And for most part of Baar Baar Dekho, the audience is on the same page as Jai: clueless about what is happening on the screen in front of them

 

The supporting cast too meld into the rest of the sub-par performances. Ram Kapoor helps people let out the occasional laugh. Rajit Kapoor, Rohan Joshi, Sayani Gupta, Sarika, the rest of them all are there in the film probably because they were written into the script.

Baar Baar Dekho shines in the cinematography department. Ravi K Chandran's camera captures Thailand, Glasgow and Katrina's abs in all their glory; making Baar Baar Dekho more about the fluff than anything substantial.

In all, watch Baar Baar Dekho if you swear by the newer, fitter, leaner, hotter Katrina Kaif and her abs. There's nothing much to watch otherwise.

Nissan recalls 134,000 Maxima and Murano models due to fire risk

The Basics: Nissan has recalled approximately 134,000 2016-2017 Maxima sedans, 2015-2017 Murano crossovers, and 2015-2016 Murano Hybrids due to the potential of a fire. Only models equipped with Intelligent Cruise Control are affected by this recall.

The Problem: Apparently, the Intelligent Cruise Control features an anti-lock brake actuator pump that may allow brake fluid to leak onto an internal electrical circuit board. If that happens, it could result in an underhood fire.

Injuries/Deaths: None reported, though there have been some reports of "thermal damage." We're pretty sure that's a nice way of saying some cars have caught on fire.

The Fix: The ABS actuator will be replaced free of charge. Nissan has not yet released a timeline for the fix, but owners will receive a letter in the mail with details.

If you own one: You'll know if your circuit board has been damaged by leaking brake fluid if your ABS light stays illuminated for more than 10 seconds after the engine has been started. "If this occurs, owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors away from other vehicles or structures and to not drive the vehicle," says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Indian Railways: Surge pricing has to come with a rationale behind it

Railways has been the cheapest, quickest and essentially the most preferred mode of transport. Unlike airlines, wherein prices vary depending upon, well various factors, Railways has had a mandated rate with prices depending upon distance and the type of travel such as non-AC sleeper, AC chair, third AC and so on. However, this is about to change, at least for Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi.

A new announcement reveals the surge pricing strategy by the Indian Railways for the above mentioned premium trains. Passengers travelling by Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto will pay somewhere between 10 and 50 percent more under a dynamic surge pricing system starting 9 September. So, after 10 percent seats sold at regular fare, the prices will go on increasing by 10 percent every 10 percent of berths sold till it hits a ceiling of 50 percent. This would mean a New Delhi-Mumbai third AC fare for Rajdhani, which is Rs 1,628, will go up to Rs 1,791 with 10 percent increase and all the way up to Rs 2,279 with maximum 50 percent increase.

Surge basically is an effective mechanism that essentially works according to demand and supply. For instance, when there are more people looking for taxi rides and there are fewer cabs in that particular area, price increases. Once there are sufficient cabs, the price goes down.

All businesses vary prices depending upon the situation. If seats are not filling up, businesses drop prices. But in a high demand route, businesses still have the option to keep the prices high. This applicable only when there is enough supply. When one sees people aren’t buying tickets, then there can be algorithms to help you reduce the pricing to encourage people to buy. On the other hand, there are trains like Duronto, which are high demand and high cost, and subsidize rates for certain areas. So, there needs to be a balancing factor too.

Nikhil Pahwa, Indian entrepreneur, founder of Medianama and Savetheinternet.in volunteer, tells us, “Surge pricing for trains could mean some people who need to travel to a location, may not be able to do so because they can’t pay the surge price. While I understand, it is fine to have this when there are multiple suppliers, but govt is a monopoly. And, this may not be great idea. In order to be fair and actually bring prices down, any surge pricing has to be coupled with increase in supply. ”

Traditionally, the government doesn’t deploy additional trains if there are lot of people waiting to buy ticket. The surge pricing concept has to come in with a rationale behind it, which looks at demand and supply, and not just making money, but more importantly people’s needs are met for travel.

The government’s aim is to make Rs 500 crore more during the current financial year.

Pahwa adds, “Now, we need public service to be profitable so that they can work on enhancing the capacity and so on. There is nothing wrong if they make money. The aviation policy that came out charging a cess on popular routes, so that govt can balance it out by subsidising tickets to smaller towns worked well. As a user it hit me, but this actually might encourage people in smaller towns to take flights because they are cheaper. There are different rationales behind making these choices. ”

Meanwhile, the surge pricing issue has already turned into a political hot potato, with many accusing the announcement anti-people, outrageous and so on.

ONGC shares gain nearly 4% on better-than-expected Q1 results; should you invest?

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) shares gained as much as 3.92 per cent on Thursday after the company on Wednesday reported better-than-estimated results for the quarter ended June 30, 2016. For April-June period, net profit of ONGC stood at Rs 4,232.54 crore, down 21.16 per cent, against Rs 5,362.36 crore in the same quarter last year. Net sales of the company fell by 21.46 per cent year-on-year to Rs 17,670.37 crore for the quarter under review against Rs 22,498.75 crore in the same quarter last year. At 10.15 am, shares of ONGC were trading 2.57 per cent up at Rs 251.40. The scrip opened the day at Rs 249.50 and has touched a high and low of Rs 254.70 and Rs 247.85, respectively, in trade so far. Benchmark BSE Oil & Gas index was trading 0.45 per cent up at 11,121.86.

According to Edelweiss Securities, ONGC’s Q1FY17 net profit stood 25 per cent ahead of estimate on account of lower expenditure. Production decline continued with oil production missing estimate, while gas came slightly ahead. Management guided gas production to improve as new projects are commissioned. Furthermore, current trend of low opex will continue as new contract and rig rates are down. Lower domestic gas price in the second half of 2016-17 will cap benefits of oil recovery. However, higher oil and gas prices portend brighter prospects from FY18. The current market price is discounting undemanding $45 per bbl long-term oil. The brokerage house maintained ‘Buy’ on ONGC shares with a target price of Rs 288.

Operating profit of ONGC fell by 18.39 per cent year-on-year to Rs 9382.87 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2016 against Rs 11497.49 crore in the same quarter last year.

System to track funds for digital currencies like bitcoin to launch soon

A London-based start-up said on Wednesday it would launch the first fund to track an index of digital currencies such as bitcoin in the coming weeks. DLT Financial said it hopes the tracker fund will make such currencies a more attractive investment asset class. The new company was spun out of fintech start-up Tramonex, which earlier this year received a 250,000 pound ($333,000) grant from the government to develop a new prototype for currency settlements using the technology that underpins bitcoin.

The index comprises 10 cryptocurrencies – so-called because they use cryptographic signatures to keep the transactions secure. As well as the original cryptocurrency bitcoin, the index includes ether, the digital currency that powers blockchain platform Ethereum, and Ripple, a digital currency designed for bank-to-bank payments.

Cryptocurrencies are used to send money around the world instantly and at low cost, with no need for third-party checks. They are also bought as an investment that has almost no correlation with other currencies and asset classes, though their volatility – and complexity – puts many off.

“We’re really looking to bridge the gap between the existing blockchain world of tech and the more traditional institutional investment community,” said Dave Askey, co-founder of DLT Financial and the chief technology officer of Tramonex.

“Currently it’s really very hard to invest in these assets as a pretty deep technical knowledge is needed to buy and manage them. We want to bring (them) to the wider community.” Many investors worry about the security of digital currencies – Hong-Kong-based bitcoin exchange Bitfinex was just the latest exchange to fall victim to a hacking attack last month.

But DLT says that it will use cold storage – where data is taken offline and stored in hard drives to guard against the possibility of being hacked into and having money stolen – and that it and not its investors will bear the risk of theft.

As the Apple event approaches, no surprises left for the iPhone 7?

We know the two new Apple devices are going to be called the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. The two phones are going to sport 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch displays. The new Apple A10 SoC is going to have a CPU clocked at 2.4GHz. The models will be available in 32GB, 128GB and 256GB variations. There is a dual camera setup on the back, and a new force sensitive belly button. The devices will be priced between Rs 52,914 for the 32 GB iPhone 7 to Rs 78,933 for the 256 GB iPhone 7 Plus. There is going to be a piano black colour option.

Wait, we know even more, there is going to be a dual speaker grille. It is going to support 4K video recording at 60 fps. There is no longer a 3.5 mm audio jack. There are Lightning EarPods included in every box. The smartphones will be waterproof. Pre-orders will start from September 9, and the device will hit stores on September 23. So, what is left for Apple to announce at the event? Did Apple just secretly invent leaking as an alternative marketing strategy? Especially, considering the company is known to be quite tight lipped about its products otherwise.

There is absolutely no surprise they can pull, and falling short at this point will only lead to disappointment after all the hype. A comparison to features of current phones in the market by finder.com.au lists all of the above features as a step that Apple simply must take to remain competitive. Access to NFC for device pairing, shatterproof screens and an iris scanner for biometric security are the only features that competing products do have, but are not yet leaked or rumoured to be in the iPhone 7.

If they do pull a surprise, hopefully, it is based on actual functionality. At the 2016 WWDC, Apple pulled a surprise, where ‘alternative medicine’ practitioner, Deepak Chopra was invoked to launch an app. It was that epic moment in human history when Apple ‘invented’ breathing. Apple wanted to remind its users to keep taking in the oxygen, in an effort to think of health beyond fitness. The app is perfectly fine, and actually helpful, but it is the use of a magical thinker to lend credibility to the app that can alienate customers who have always been attracted by the robustness of the design and user testing.

A developer accused Apple of copying the Breathe app. There were similar apps in the App store before breathe, including Deepak Chopra’s “mindfullness coach”, and the much more scientifically tested and marketed, Flowy, an app that has been designed to help tackle anxiety and panic attacks. As long as Apple does not pull a surprise like that, and makes announcements along the lines of the leaks and rumours, the event should be good.

Jaguar's XF diesel isn't just fuel efficient, it's the cheapest XF available

Jaguar announced the 2017 Jaguar XF will now offer the 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel the company introduced on the XE. In addition to returning an impressive 42 miles per gallon on the highway and 31 in the city, the diesel is the cheapest XF available at $48,445. This means that picking the oil-burner will save you $3,040 over the cheapest gas V6 version, which only manages 29 mpg on the highway and 20 in the city.

With 180 horsepower, the diesel is significantly down on power compared with the base V6 model. As a result, the diesel moves slower. Jaguar estimates the base V6 is good for a 5.2-second 0-60 time and the diesel should be able to do the same in 8 seconds. However, that's the only real downside. Even with the slower acceleration times, the diesel still has a very usable 317 lb-ft of torque available from 1,750-2,500 rpm. Based onour test drive of a diesel-equipped XE, the engine also breaks the old diesel stereotypes. It's both quite smooth and responsive.

Unless you seriously need that straight-line performance, the Jaguar XF diesel arguably makes the most sense. It provides significant price savings and better fuel economy. The diesel XF also joins the XE and F-Pace diesels, leaving just the XJ and F-Type as the only Jaguars without compression-ignition engines. The British automaker is planning to remedy that, as a Jaguar Land Rover executive said the company plans to also add a diesel XJ variant in the US, even in the wake of the VW diesel scandal.

The track is composed by Mithoon and sung by Mohit Chauhan. Badshah has also rapped a few lines in one of the songs of ‘Shivaay’. Recently, he had stated, “I have done a song for ‘Shivaay’ with (composer) Mithoon, but it is in a very different zone. It is very unlike me. It is about Shiva, and has some lines on him.”

‘Shivaay’ is slated to release on October 28 and will be clashing with Karan Johar’s ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’.

Revisiting the 2008-09 auto bailout that saved GM and Chrysler

The Federal Reserve stayed open late on December 31, 2008. There's almost no way you could remember that because barely anyone knew at the time. But General Motors had to pay its bills, and the Fed wired money so GM could still buy things in January. Without those funds, the nation's largest automaker wouldn't have seen much of 2009.

It's one of many heart-stopping moments that illustrate just how close Detroit's Big Three came to extinction nearly a decade ago. They're chronicled in a new movie, Live Another Day, premiering in theaters September 16. Filmmakers Bill Burke and Didier Pietri interviewed nearly all of the key executives, federal officials, and union chiefs to recreate the auto industry's most perilous period.

The movie begins in the aftermath of Lehman Brothers' demise amid the global financial meltdown. Things looked bleak for American carmakers, and their CEOs were laughed off Capitol Hill when they sought a Wall Street-style bailout. "It was a feeling that it was the end of the world," Pietri told Autoblog in an interview where he and Burke previewed the film.

Saved by last-minute loans authorized by the Bush Administration after Congress refused to act, Detroit staggered into 2009 with a faint pulse. Live Another Day illustrates the downward spiral that played out that winter as President Obama and his task force – with little prior knowledge of the auto industry – wrestled over the fate of hundreds of thousands of jobs. GM's longtime CEO Rick Wagoner was fired in March. Fiat CEOSergio Marchionne suddenly appeared as a savior for Chrysler, with his own motives. Obama rejected restructuring plans from the automakers. Chrysler declared bankruptcy on April 30. GM followed June 1.

The sequence was very public, but Pietri and Burke showcase lesser-known events that shaped the outcome. They also seek to dispel the notion that the government rescued GM and Chrysler from incompetent leaders. "We never subscribed to the theories that the management structures of the companies were a bunch of idiots who didn't know what is going on," Pietri said. At one point, Chrysler executives were negotiating with Marchionne and Fiat. Unbeknownst to them, the government was having its own talks with the Italian automaker.

The filmmakers also cast light on the bankruptcy process, which was shredded to shepherd two of America's industrial icons through reorganizations. Though creditors were often cast as evil Wall Street sharpies, many represented retirement accounts, like funds for Indiana police and teachers.

"We pushed aside 150 years of bankruptcy rules to make it what wanted to be done at the time," Pietri said.

Ford's plight is also featured in the film. Though it avoided bankruptcy, the automaker was in bad shape in the run-up to the Great Recession. The decision to mortgage all of its assets, including the trademark to the Blue Oval itself, gave Ford enough cash to survive while GM and Chrysler bled white.

"Ford showed up at the bank teller before they ran out of cash," Pietri said.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally and his financial team were forced to act early because their situation was so dire. Ironically, GM and Chrysler were doing relatively well. At one point, Chrysler had a $9 billion line of credit it didn't renew, former CEO Bob Nardelli told the filmmakers. But with heavy legacy costs and lineups filled with trucks and SUVs, neither could respond when the market crashed, fuel prices surged, and sales dried up.

Nardelli, who has not spoken at length publicly about his time at Chrysler, is part of the sprawling cast that includes Obama task force leader Steve Rattner, Tennessee Senator Bob Corker, former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, Ford president Joe Hinrichs, former UAW president Bob King, former Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda, former GM vice chairman Bob Lutz, and current Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne. Producers also spoke with Wagoner, GM's CEO from 2000 to '09, who elected not to go on camera. They also reached out to both US presidents involved, but neither participated in the project. Al Koch – who oversaw GM's restructuring and described the last-minute New Year's Eve money scramble – comedian Jay Leno, and several media members also appear.

The project is the brainchild of Burke and Pietri, who co-directed and produced the movie. The friends met in business school, which shaped their strategy to show the auto bailout through the eyes of the leaders who made critical decisions. It's inspired by the bookCrash Course by Reuters managing editor and Pulitzer prize winner Paul Ingrassia. Lifelong car enthusiasts, they approached the bailout from different viewpoints. Burke grew up in Pontiac, MI, and his father worked for Detroit's iconic WJR radio. Born in Paris, Pietri saw the Motor City from afar but remembers being captivated by the chrome and curves of American cars.

The movie is a look back to the not-so-distant past, and Burke and Pietri show the mistakes and triumphs that shaped today's car business. Though they argue some things could have gone smoother, they ultimately view the bailout positively through the lens of history.

"I think it's great for this country that Detroit and the Big 3 are doing as well as they are," Burke said.

They also aren't shy about touching on what might have been, and the producers described a scene where they simulated GM's towering Detroit headquarters in the Renaissance Center going dark, punctuated by the sound of a light switch clapping off. There were a lot of "dramatic moments where a lot of people that were there at the time, including the executives thought 'okay, this is the end, these companies are going to cease to exist,'" Pietri said.

Though that was a visual simulation, in the winter of 2008–09, the Ren Cen really did go mostly dark in the evenings as GM scraped and saved every penny. Lighting Michigan's tallest building wasn't a priority. Live Another Day seeks to show just how close the American auto industry came to the end of the road.

Cauvery water row: Protests continue in Karnataka, bandh called in Mandya, CM convenes all-party meet

Bengaluru: The Cauvery Hitarakshana Samithi (Cauvery protection committee) called for a bandh on Tuesday in Mandya - the hotbed of Cauvery politics – a day after the Supreme Court directed the Karnataka government to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

This comes as farmers and others continue to hit the streets protesting the top court directive to release 15,000 cusecs of water per day for next ten days to the neighbouring state.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, whose government has been expressing its inability to release water to Tamil Nadu citing poor storage, would hold a meeting with floor leaders of all parties in the state legislature, MPs and district-in charge ministers today evening to take stock of the situation.

MV Agusta F4Z polarizes like nothing else on two wheels

Apparently, this bike was designed and built for a wealthy Japanese entrepreneur. No other F4Z models are planned, making this a one-of-one design.

We don't know a whole heck of a lot about the bike you see above. It's called the MV Agusta F4Z, and it's definitely based on the Italian marque's venerable F4 superbike platform. That means it's powered by a four-cylinder, 1,000cc engine. Most of the parts underneath the futuristic-looking skin appear pretty much normal – there's a traditional fork at the front, MV Agusta's standard single-sided swingarm at the rear, and a trellis frame holding all of it together.

But that bodywork sure is different, eh? It's red and silver, as is traditional for MV Agusta machinery, but past that it looks absolutely nothing like any MV Agusta we've ever seen before. That's because it was designed in partnership with Milan-based design houseZagato, which is better known for its enviously beautiful four-wheeled vehicles. Is the end result good? Bad? We're not sure, so let's settle for now on "different."

We know that MV Agusta is working on a new superbike platform, which makes us wonder if elements of this Zagato design will ever make it into production. We should know a lot more about the MV Agusta F4Z on September 4th, which is when it's slated to get a full official reveal.
