Aishwarya Rai Bachchan reveals her daughter Aaradhya is sensitive like her

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and her daughter Aaradhya Bachchan are surely one of the most loved mother-daughter duos in Bollywood. The actress is a doting mother, and has always given more priority to her daughter.

Recently, in an interview with a leading magazine, Aishwarya was asked if Aaradhya is also like her, to which she said, “Aaradhya too is a sensitive girl. It’s a wonderful quality to have.” The actress also revealed a secret formula of her happiness. She said, “A smile from my daughter and that’s it.”

At the age of 43, Aishwarya is still considered to be an epitome of beauty. Talking about it, the ‘Jazbaa’ actress said, “Beauty is transient and changes with time. I have always extended beyond a singular dimension. I haven’t been just a model, actor or title winner. The course I charted out for my career made me multi-dimensional and gave me opportunities to represent India on many global platforms.”

“My mother Vrinda Rai is the nucleus of my existence; she has gently moulded me, shaped me, picked me up when I’ve been down, kept the faith in me and taught me to be the best version of myself that I can be,” she added.

Aishwarya is known for her amazing red carpet appearances. Talking about it in the interview, the actress said, “Walking the red carpet is your opportunity to have fun with fashion. You’re in the world of seduction; although, I don’t think you should take it too seriously. I believe in being confident and dressing in something that truly shows who I am—that’s my little secret.”

Insane! Ranveer Singh praises his upcoming co-star Alia Bhatt in the most hilarious way possible

Just yesterday, a confirmation was made that Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt will be starring in Zoya Akhtar’s next film titled ‘Gully Boy’. It is for the first time that Alia and Ranveer are going to pair up for a film and their fans just cannot hold the excitement. Of course, when such ace and fun-loving artistes team up for a project, excitement is bound to double in intensity.

Well not just us, even Ranveer Singh seems to be quite excited about working with Alia Bhatt. He recently uploaded a video of himself praising the gorgeous and talented actress. Given it’s Ranveer Singh’s video, it has to have that quintessential dash of madness in it.

Disguising himself as an old uncle, Ranveer went on to praise Alia for her awesome performance in films like ‘Udta Punjab’, ‘Dear Zindagi’ and more. Later he states that he is looking ‘Faarward’ for more such fantastic films.

Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Jagga Jasoos’ to have 29 songs!

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif’s next venture together, ‘Jagga Jasoos’, has been in news for all the wrong reasons. The movie has already been delayed for quite some time, and the makers also had to go through some hard time reuniting the ex-lovers, Ranbir and Katrina, to shoot together.

But everything finally started working out after director Anurag Basu finally convinced both the actors to come together and promote the movie.

And now, there is one more surprising fact about the movie that has come to light. As per recent reports, ‘Jagga Jasoos’ will be having 29 songs. The music director of the film, Pritam Chakraborty is apparently doing something different with the soundtrack of ‘JJ’.

“There are 29 songs in all,” says Pritam.

When asked the reason behind the same, apart from it being a musical, he said, “You see, Ranbir Kapoor stutters throughout the film, the only time he doesn’t, is when he sings. And every time he expresses an emotion strongly, it’s through songs. Think of the effortlessness and the way the songs are featured in ‘La La Land’. They’re part of the story. And the narrative flows forward through it.”

Excited much?

After the birth of her baby boy Taimur Ali Khan Pataudi, Kareena Kapoor Khan is bracing herself to make a comeback to films. She had promised that she would not stay away from the limelight post pregnancy and hence, she is doing her best to get back in shape and come back to films. Well, not just Bollywood, this time around, Kareena has plans to go Hollywood too,

If reports are to be believed then Kareena has bagged an international project to feature in a brand film for a global entertainment channel. A source informed to a leading daily, “It’s a well-known global factual entertainment channel and they had approached Kareena during her pregnancy. One of the main reasons is her connect with the global audiences. She is quite popular in the UK which she visits often with her hubby Saif Ali Khan. When Kareena was approached for it, she also felt it was perfect for her. She has seen her buddies Salman Khan and Karan Johar connecting with the audiences on TV and felt it was the right time for her to be seen on the small screen.”

Yaay! We are so excited with this news. Kareena sure has a massive fan following all over the globe and it would be a delight to watch her showing off her acting prowess with some international stars just like her contemporaries Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra.

Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna Hang Out With Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan!

Recently, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan were spotted hanging out together along with their friends.

Their group included Hrithik’s ex-wife Sussanne Khan, Akshay’s wife Twinkle Khanna and Gayatri Joshi (of Swades fame) and her husband Vikas Oberoi. The gang took a group picture that was shared on social media and seemed to be having a great time!

There were rumours that Akki and Duggu were not on the best of terms after their films Rustom and Mohenjo Daro clashed last year. But the pic puts these rumours to rest.

Also there is a strong buzz doing the rounds that Hrithik and Sussanne might be thinking of reconciling since they’ve been spotted together a lot more now than before! Watch this space for more updates.

Kareena Kapoor Khan reacts to Priyanka Chopra’s statement on Taimur having a pout

The whole Bollywood was talking about Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan’s son, Taimur Ali Khan, when he was born. Even Priyanka Chopra had spoken about Taimur and had said that he has the Kareena’s pout.

She had said, “It is such a wonderful moment and it is such a beautiful baby and he already has Kareena’s pout. I am very excited for both Saif and Bebo. And the child is going to be a Prince and people need to focus on that.”

When Kareena was asked about Priyanka’s statement, she said, “My son is the most gorgeous man this side of the equator. I take it as a compliment because yes his lips are amazing.”

Well, Kareena and Priyanka were said to be rivals, but it looks like now everything is well between the two.

When it comes to films, Priyanka is all set to make her Hollywood debut with ‘Baywatch’, and Kareena will soon start shooting for ‘Veerey Di Wedding’.

Phillauri trailer is quirky, intriguing: Anushka Sharma, Diljit Dosanjh leave you curious

There's lots to love, and giggle about in Anushka Sharma's next film Phillauri.

It begins with Suraj Sharma (of Life of Pi fame) being declared maanglik, and therefore he needs to marry a tree (a common practice to ward of the evil). However, a ghost stuck in the tree (Anushka Sharma) starts to haunt (we use this term loosely) him, claiming he is now married to her.

Anushka looks ethereal as the ghost, even as the VFX (which makes her float and gives her a halo effect) reminds you of Amitabh Bachchan in Bhoothnath. She's a friendly spirit, who then follows around Suraj's character all around his house. This creates quite some tension as he is due to get married in a couple of days.

However, the tone of the film changes completely when someone asks Shashi, the friendly ghost, if she has any remaining desire, because of which she is lurking around. We then go into a flashback, many centuries ago, in Punjab.

It's a fascinating world, quite different from the colourful, contemporary setting that the trailer starts with.

In it, Shashi tells her lover (Diljit Dosanj, looking quite dashing) who is a singer, that he has the power to change the world with his voice. He vows to come back to her only after he has made a name for himself. They both look quite in love, and we are shown how much goes wrong once he leaves.

The film then sets out to show you how the two worlds merge, via one spirit. A quirky and entertaining trailer, Phillauri looks and feels a lot like Love Aaj Kal, what with the sepia tones that are used to depict old-world Punjab. Anushka is the holding ground of the trailer, while there is much intrigue about Diljit Dosanjh.

Phillauri releases on 24 March. Anushka had shown the trailer to members of the film industry over the weekend, and they had all tweeted lovely things about it. In a one of a kind marketing ploy, Anushka released the trailer while on a live Facebook chat.

Watch the trailer here:

Shraddha Kapoor nails it in the first poster of ‘Haseena’

Shraddha Kapoor has played girl next door and bubbly characters in all her films, but now, she is all set to change that. The actress will be seen playing the role of Haseena Parkar in the film titled ‘Haseena’. The poster of the film is out, and Shraddha nails it in it.

The director of the film, Apoorva Lakhia, took to Twitter to unveil the first poster. Along with the poster, he tweeted, “Introducing #Haseena @ShraddhaKapoor @SiddhanthKapoor @AnkBhatia The queen comes to town….”

The shooting of the film is currently going on, and it is slated to hit the screens on July 14, 2017.

Well, a lot of people had a view that Shraddha won’t be able to do the role, but after looking at the poster we can see that the actress is just perfect for the film.

New England Patriots Pull Off Comeback To Beat Atlanta & Win Super Bowl 51

What. A. Game! With the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons chasing history in Super Bowl 51, the game was bound to be epic. It certainly delivered, and at the end of the Feb. 5 NFL championship game — one that went into overtime — it was New England who walked away the winner!

Close to 70,000 fans at a nearly sold-out NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, witnessed a clash for the history books. On one end there was Tom Brady, 39, of the New England Patriots, looking to become the quarterback with the most Super Bowl victories in history. On the other, Matt Ryan, 31, of the Atlanta Falcons, hoping to bring the Dirty South their first ever NFL championship. Sadly for Georgia, New England won: 34-28 in sudden death overtime.

The first quarter was really quiet, as Atlanta held Brady back from scoring at all. Things seem light up in the second quarter, when Devonta Freeman, 24, scored his first Super Bowl touchdown. The Falcons were 7-0. Matt’s connect with Tevin Coleman, 23, to put Atlanta up 14-0, though things weren’t smooth sailing for the Falcons, as they kept on racking up the holding penalties. Yikes. Yet, it all was washed away when Robert Alford, 28, intercepted a toss by Brady to run it back for a touchdown. Not only was Atlanta up 21-0, but that Tom’s first ever postseason pick-six. The Patriots tried but failed to find the endzone in the first half, settling for a field-goal in the last three seconds. 21-3.

After Lady Gaga, 30, lit up the night with her halftime show, the Patriots came to life. Brady connected with James White, 25, to finally score a touchdown, but the extra point was no good! Atlanta responded with Austin Hooper, 22, catching a pass to put the Falcons up 28-9 at the end of the third quarter.

New England came back to life in the fourth quarter, scoring a field goal early on. After stripping the ball away from Matt Ryan in a fumble, New England was able to capitalize. Tom ultimately connected with Danny Amendola, 25, and after a successful 2-point conversion, the score was 28-20. Atlanta seemed to fall apart, as Tom marched his team down and scored a touchdown with less than a minute left. The two-point conversion was good and the game was tied at 28! The Falcons couldn’t do much after that and for the first time, the Super Bowl went into overtime!

New England won the overtime toss, choosing to take the ball in sudden death overtime. It was pretty much over at that, at Brady proved why he’s considered the “greatest of all time.” Tom led his team to the endzone, and it was James White who scored the game-winning touchdown.

By winning this game, Tom tied with Bart Starr, 83, for total NFL Championships. However, Bart played football back before there even WAS a Super Bowl, as he has three NFL championships and two Super Bowl rings (Super Bowls 1 and 2, btw.) Similarly, coach Bill Belichick, 64, would become the coach with the most Super Bowl wins in his entire career. Congratulations!

Akshay Kumar to wear just one costume throughout his forthcoming film ‘Gold’?

After ‘Talaash’, Reema Kagti is all set to don the hat of a director once again, with ‘Gold’. The film is a sports drama, set on the backdrop of the 1948 Olympics and will have Akshay Kumar playing the lead.

We just got our hands on an interesting piece of news. If reports are to be believed, then Akshay will be seen wearing only one attire throughout the film.

Not something very common, isn’t it?

A leading entertainment portal reports that the superstar’s only costume in the film will be dhoti and kurta. We’ve sure seen Akshay wearing many a types of clothes, but just a dhoti and kurta continuously for a few hours? We don’t remember so!

The 1948 Olympics had taken place at Wembley Park in London. This was the first time that India participated in the Olympics as an independent nation. Men’s Hockey team bagged the gold medal in the tournament.

Reportedly, Akshay will be playing the team’s coach.

Salman Khan’s reaction to ‘Bigg Boss 10’ winner Manveer Gurjar being married is shocking

The tenth season of the controversial reality show, ‘Bigg Boss’ finally came to an end with a commoner, Manveer Gurjar going home with the trophy.

But soon after his victory, he landed up in a soup as the pictures and videos of him being married started doing the rounds on the internet. Not just this, reports also claimed that he has a 3-year-old daughter named Vibisha.

The news came as a shock to all, as Manveer kept claiming in the show that he had fled from home to avoid getting married and also added that he does not have a girlfriend.

So while everyone waited for Salman’s reaction to the news, the actor finally did react but in a rather shocking way.

According to a reports, “Salman was pretty unfazed when he was informed about Manveer’s wedding news. He was neither surprised nor shocked, instead it seemed as if he already knew about it or probably just didn’t want to pay any heed to it.”

Does this mean that Salman and the producers already knew about this?

We wonder!

Apple is building a custom ARM chip to handle low power tasks on future MacBooks: Report

Apple is looking to enhance its Mac lineup by adding another CPU into the mix. This CPU is likely to be an ARM-based design that will reside alongside an Intel CPU.

Apple’s MacBooks have featured Intel CPUs for many years now, and one can see why. Intel offers a combination of relatively low power consumption and high CPU performance that’s hard to match by rival AMD. However, an Intel CPU is no match for an ARM CPU when it comes to power consumption.

ARM CPUs are used in mobile devices for this very reason. They sip power and they’re incredibly efficient. The only problem is that they’re not powerful enough to compete with Intel in the desktop space.

Apple already uses an ARM chip in its 2016 MacBook Pros. This chip handles the TouchBar and TouchID sensor of the MacBook Pros.

The iPhone maker apparently wants to design some new ARM chips that it can use alongside Intel CPUs. These chips are intended to handle Apple’s PowerNap feature, reports Bloomberg.

PowerNap is a feature that lets MacBooks receive software updates, email, etc. even when your MacBook’s lid is closed. This is a very low power state that’s intended to keep your device up-to-date in the background. Traditionally, the Intel chip was used for this.

Replacing this with an ARM CPU makes a lot of sense because the tasks to be performed are very specific and routine. Of course, the ultra-low power consumption of ARM chips will also help. Given Apple’s tight hardware and software integration, we doubt that Microsoft will do something similar any time soon.

There has been speculation that ARM will eventually overtake Intel, particularly in the server space. That might eventually happen, but right now, ARM has nothing that can compete with the raw performance of an Intel platform.

Maybe AMD’s Ryzen will have something to say about it come March.

MissMalini's Hottest Scoops From Bollywood!

For those of you who don’t know me, a quick intro: I’m MissMalini – a social media jedi who eats, breathes, and sleeps Bollywood. I moved to Mumbai in the millennium with 2 suitcases, a passion to write, and something to say about everything that I loved – and voilà, a blog was born! Now, I spend my days jetting from movie promotions to fashion weeks to the most fabulous Page 3 parties around town – rubbing shoulders with the who’s who of B-town and bringing my readers the inside scoop on it all! #LivingTheDream I’m super excited to be giving Masala! a glimpse into my life every week and look forward to taking you all on the journey that is my life!

SHAH RUKH KHAN

This week, Team MissMalini had to wait a whole eight hours to interview Shah Rukh Khan for Raees. The interview ended up happening at 1am - SRK works best at night, after all - but he really does make it worth the wait. Fun fact he shared with us was that Raees doesn't mean wealthy, unlike what most people believe. It actually refers to someone who's large-hearted and generous - which is quite like him, after all! He was super sweet, gave multiple hugs to Rashmi who interviewed him, and sent a ton of love to Team MissMalini. We love him right back! #KingOfCharm

VARUN DHAWAN

And speaking of charm, we met up with Varun Dhawan last weekend and it was only fair that it was at his gym. Have you seen those abs? I got him to reveal some of his funniest memories - like that time in college when he got into a fight with bouncers double his size at a club in Nottingham or when he had a fan boy moment with Lisa Haydon at a party much before he even thought of becoming an actor! Varun was full of life, spoke with abandon, and was as lovely as ever! PS - He said he loved interviews with MM because they're always so much fun and like no other. You're totally our favourite too, VD!

HRITHIK ROSHAN

Just when we thought our week couldn’t get any hotter, the team met Hrithik Roshan. Despite being a major star, the girls couldn’t get over how humble he is. When we congratulated him on completing 17 years in the industry and asked him if he'd ever predicted this kind of superstardom, he just said "I didn't know. I just had to make sure that I get my dialogues right. When my dad says "cut" and he's happy, that's all I did. I just worked very hard for the small things, and eventually, when it all came together, it looked really good." Aww, Hrithik! Like your Ek Pal Ka Jeena moves were a fluke! Also, we love his views on parenting which are so relevant especially in the times of social media and paparazzi. With his sons, Hrithik always ensures they fear nothing and even when they’re in a really big crowd, he reminds them to smile, wave out and feel grateful for all the fans and their love. With his intense romantic thriller, Kaabil getting a great response, I bet he’ll be seeing a lot more of that adulation in the days to come.

SIDHARTH MALHOTRA

To wrap things up for the week, I headed over to meet Sidharth Malhotra who is the celebrity ambassador for New Zealand and was so much fun to hang out with. He told us the secret to his healthy body is drinking lots of water. He even revealed that he had this crush on Carol Gracias back in his modeling days but the one actress he still has a crush on is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. We love your honesty, Sid. And of course you’re all the eye candy we needed to end the week on a sweet note.

Akshay Kumar on Jolly LLB 2: 'Grateful to Arshad Warsi for showing me the way'

While stars like Shah Rukh and Salman Khan prefer to work in an average of two films per year, Akshay Kumar, with his meticulous planning and calculation, does no less than four films every calendar year.

He has his economics worked out, and like every year, Kumar has already announced his four films coming up for release in 2017. Belonging to four totally different genres, this year, Akshay’s releases include Jolly LLB 2 (February 10), Toilet – Ek Prem Katha (June 2), 2.0 with Rajinikanth (October 19) and Padman (starts rolling first week of March).

So here's a question everyone wants to ask him. How does he maintain this pace? “I have the stamina to balance three to four films as an actor and four as a producer. That keeps me occupied for the whole year,” says Kumar, who strictly believes that a film should not take more than 60-70 days to complete. He even managed to complete a multi-starrer like Housefull 3in 38 days flat.

Talking about his experience of playing a lawyer for the first time in Jolly LLB 2 — a courtroom drama, where Kumar’s character questions the system — the actor says:

“Any film that you finish in three to four months, your experience is bound to be good because you are living that character for a little while. If a film's shoot extends more than that then you start getting bored even if you are portraying the best of characters.  I prefer to complete my films in maximum three months and when the film gets extended by more than five to six months, I don’t enjoy working. As soon as I start a film I tell the makers that let’s finish it fast.”

Akshay Kumar believes in following his director rather than preparing for the role himself. He adds, "Working with Subhash Kapoor (director) was excellent.  For the first time I was playing a lawyer and I enjoyed it because I am seen cracking quite a few interesting cases in the film. I remember I had started shooting for this film one day after the release of Rustom and today I am sitting here promoting the film.”  The film also stars Huma Qureshi who plays the role of Kumar's wife, who “wants her peg and food on time”.

Actor Arshad Warsi had essayed the lead role in the 2013 film, Jolly LLB, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Arshad had earlier said he was supposed to feature in the second instalment too, but then the makers wanted a “bigger star”, which they found in Akshay Kumar.

From the looks of it, Jolly LLB 2 appears far more commercial obviously because of the presence of a bigger star. However, sounding modest, Kumar says, "I am very grateful to Arshad to show me the way of doing this film. It is not about commercial or non-commercial. I just followed Arshad’s path. On the contrary I hope that this film has the kind of success the first one saw. Arshad made the first film a success and thereby a big film and now the pressure is on me. When a star does a character-oriented or an author-backed role there is definitely some kind of pressure.”

Talking about the awards, after the nominations for this year's Filmfare Awards were announced, Twitter seemed to have been instantly enraged by the overlooking of Kumar for the Best Actor nod, despite acclaimed performances in Airlift and Rustom. #FilmfareAwardsOnSale trended furiously, buoyed by indignant tweets from Akshay Kumar's fan clubs.

So how does he deal with the situation when his work goes unrecognised?

“Maybe I didn’t deserve an award because there were many others who did a better job. Awards are good and because of these reasons I won’t stop believing or questioning awards,” says Akshay Kumar.

He appears a bit rattled when asked whether he had advised his co-star of many films, Kareena Kapoor Khan, recently to believe in rewards and not awards. “Did Kareena give that out? That was supposed to be a secret, I had told her in confidence. I told her that she should just keep working and not think too much."

While action remains his forte, in 26 years of his career, Kumar has tried quite a few genres.

“It’s only recently that I have started enjoying my work. Now, I am getting a lot of different offers so it feels good. I started as an action hero. For eight-10 years, I only did action every day. No one would consider me for any other role than action. That got to me. I learnt that you can’t stick to one image. You have to have different images. Not only will people say that to you but you yourself will start getting bored of it," he says.

“I still remember one day when I was going for shoot of an action film. I stayed on the 11th floor so I got into the lift and when I looked into the mirror, it talked to me and said, ‘So, you are going to do the same thing today as well? Give three kicks and two punches? Are you going to do the same thing all your life?’ That was a wake up call. Then I decided to do something different. I spoke to Priyadarshan sir and he believed I could do comedy. I didn’t have that belief in myself. I also learnt comedy from Rajkumar Santoshi and Neeraj Vora," adds Kumar.

He holds Priyadarshan in high regard. The actor-director duo gave hits like Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, Bhagam Bhag and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. While Kumar has no immediate plans to reunite with the director on a project, he only has heaps of praise for him.  “I love Priyadarshan’s work. That man is a genius. No one makes comedies better Priyadarshan. He finishes a film in 30-40 days. He writes his own scripts, edits the film besides directing it. He is highly talented.”

Akshay-Kumar

Kumar might have chosen acting as his career just for money, but he says as time passed  he started becoming an 'extremely passionate actor' - and this change was brought about by 1999 film Sangharsh. "When I assured myself of a decent bank balance, that's when I started taking risks. If I recollect, Sangharsh changed my perspective as an actor. I started to love what I do and now I am an extremely passionate actor," he adds.

He recently tweeted about Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil calling it a good film, and strongly feels that social media helps in maintaining good relations between actors.

“Lot of times people write anything. Problems do occur between actors but media makes mountain out of a mole-hill with screaming headlines. It is all exaggerated. Now you can fix these problems with the help of social media. I was often accused of chopping my co-star’s role. Do I have the power to enter a director’s editing room, take him aside and cut another actor's role while the director keeps watching me do so? It happened with one of Priyadarshan’s film, and he got terribly angry with the journalist," shares Kumar.

Meanwhile, in the first kind of collaboration between two contemporary star/producers and a contemporary director/producer, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and filmmaker Karan Johar are coming together for a movie slated to release in 2018.

The yet untitled project will be produced by Salman and Karan, while Akshay will star in the lead role. The film will be directed by Anurag Singh, who has previously done Punjabi films. While Karan and Akshay have never worked together, Akshay and Salman have done Mujhse Shaadi Karoge and Jaaneman. However, Kumar remains tight-lipped about the project, merely saying, “Nothing has been finalised yet and if I tell you my agreement may get cancelled,” adding, "It is great that a huge star like Salman is asking another actor to do a film for him. It only happens in Hollywood, I have never seen it happen here.”

Incidentally, Salman is also a part of the Jolly LLB 2 trailer, in a dialogue related to his personal life.

In it, Kumar asks the question, “When will Salman Khan get married?" To this, he says, "Don’t worry, and don’t create controversies, Salman knows about it. After that only he signed me for his film.”

Amitabh Bachchan tweets a complaint to Vodafone, gets an instant reply from Reliance Jio!

Twitter is undoubtedly a great platform to reach out to the desired people. A few months back, superstar Amitabh Bachchan took to Twitter to share an issue he was facing with his Samsung Galaxy mobile phone. Needless to say, the problem was resolved immediately.

This time around, it was Bachchan’s cellular service provider who put him in trouble. Unable to send any SMS, he posted on Twitter, “VODAFONE WE HAVE A PROBLEM ..!! ALL SEND MESSAGES COMING FAILED .. RECEIVING SMS BUT NOT GOING .. HHEEEELLLLPPPPP !!!”

While he was expecting an immediate response from Vodafone, it was Reliance Jio who responded, offering him a free SIM!

“Sir, we would be happy to deliver a Jio SIM to you & activate it instantly through our Aadhaar based eKYC home delivery process,” they wrote.

However, they probably couldn’t crack the deal as Vodafone was quick enough to resolve Bachchan’s issue. A happy consumer, he again took to Twitter and wrote, “VODAFONE PROBLEM SOLVED … THANK YOU .. ALL SMS GOING THROUGH NOW …. BAAAADDDDUUUMMBBAAA …!!”

Cut-throat competition everywhere, what do you say?

Budget 2017: Govt’s commitment to strengthen digital payments will go a long way in digitising economy

“India is at the tipping point of a digital revolution,” remarked Communications and Information Technology Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad sometime ago. And today, the Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, reiterated the government’s commitment of strengthening the digital payment infrastructure and grievance handling mechanisms by unleashing the power of mobile phones for digital payments and financial inclusion.

The Indian market is set to explode over the next few years as the country firms up the digitisation phase that was started in July of 2015 when the Government of India launched the national “Digital India” initiative to make government services available to citizens electronically; by bolstering internet connectivity and improving online infrastructure.

Today that vision is close to becoming a reality. To begin with, as outlined in the budget, focus would be on rural and semi-urban areas on farmers and small business owners who don’t have access to proper healthcare, education or financial inclusion. Increased digital transactions will enable these small and micro enterprises to access formal credit.

Mobile wallets and digital payments which saw a sudden spike in demand during the demonetisation wave, have continued to dominate the payment scene despite availability of cash. In addition to this, to promote digital transactions, the government also launched a new application called Bhim that incorporates India’s Unified Payment Interface system used by 600 million mobile users, and has been downloaded 11 million times. Introduction of Aadhaar Pay will be specifically beneficial for those who do not have debit cards, mobile wallets and mobile phones. This bodes well for the Indian economy which is increasingly getting equipped for a digital tomorrow.

To keep pace with this advancement, the government announced today that it will strengthen the Financial Inclusion Fund to augment resources for taking up these initiatives. New digital infrastructure will enable digital inclusion for people, create a society with minimal digital divide and unleash a tremendous amount of entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity.

As Digital India becomes a reality, the next one billion consumers will drive unprecedented technological, social and economic transformation in the country. As reiterated by the Finance Minister, it has a transformative impact in terms of greater formalisation of the economy and mainstreaming of financial savings into the banking system. This, in turn, is expected to energise private investment in the country through lower cost of credit.

Not only this, with a massive consolidation expected in the telecom sector and the recent spectrum auctions that have removed spectrum scarcity in the country, the future of Digital India is safe and secured.

On a parting note, technology and connectivity will in all likelihood help the government become more transparent and accountable, citizens more tech-savvy and businesses more profitable and organised.

India is indeed ready for a digital revolution!

Scott Disick Ditches Kourtney Kardashian, Hooks Up with Model in Miami

It's been such an emotional roller coaster trying to keep up with the status of Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick's relationship, hasn't it?

One day they're together, the next she's pregnant, they're broken up again the day after that. It's a mess.

Kourtney & Scott Image

Throw in a dash of Justin Bieber and a heaping spoonful of Scott's ongoing addiction issues, and you've got yourself a recipe for disaster.

See, Kourtney and Scott have been having a rough month.

It started when Scott accompanied Kim Kardashian on her trip to Dubai for emotional support, as it was her first official appearance since she was robbed at gunpoint in Paris in October.

During that trip, he went missing for a whole day, and later claimed that he "overslept."

Scott Disick Looks Unamused in a Picture

It was fishy, and Kourtney thought so too, so she let him know. She reportedly went off on him, but sadly, Scott isn't in a position to care too much about what the mother of his children thinks about him.

Shortly after returning home from Dubai, he left again for the Sundance Film Festival, where he allegedly partied hard, booze and all.

Things aren't looking good already, right? Well, hold on, because it gets worse before it gets better.

(Full disclosure: it actually hasn't gotten better yet, so ...)

Scott Disick Stares at Us

OK, so after his bad behavior in Dubai and at Sundance, he went on the family's Costa Rica vacation to make things up to Kourtney.

So that's nice, right? Maybe they're patching things up? Not so fast.

Apparently, Scott left the family getaway earlier, because he was photographed yesterday in Miami, hooking up with a model in a hotel pool.

This guy ...

The model's name is J Lynne, and according to TMZ, she's been telling friends that she just met Scott yesterday and they simply "hung out" all day.

J Lynne

But judging by the photos, it was a pretty intimate hang session: at different points, she had her legs wrapped around him and he was kissing her neck.

It could have been just a one day thing, sure, but if he and Kourtney had any chance at getting back together, that one day could have ruined it completely.

Hope it was worth it, Scott!

Raees vs Kaabil box office collection: With lesser screens, SRK's film races ahead in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is a key state in the battle between Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees and Hrithik Roshan’s  Kaabil.

Like the rest of the world, SRK's film has emerged as the winner in the state despite Hrithik film having a dubbed version in Tamil. Tamil Nadu is one of the smallest markets for Hindi films in India, but after the phenomenal success of Aamir Khan’s Dangal, the market has opened up.

A lot was expected from the Republic Day weekend clash between Raees and Kaabil, which had solo releases, as Suriya’s Si-3 was pushed to February 9 due to the Jallikattu agitation in the state.

It was a straight shootout between two Bollywood biggies with the Tamil film industry watching eagerly.

As per sources in the trade, Raees opened in 105 screens on 25 January and netted Rs 2.10 Crore in five days. At the same time Kaabil which had a Tamil dub version opened in 175 screens and is said to have netted approximately Rs 1.55 Crore, during the same period.

A Chennai based exhibitor said: “Raees is the clear winner because it had only a Hindi version and collected more than Kaabil, which had a Tamil dubbed version and more screens. It clearly shows that Shah Rukh Khan is a much bigger star than Hrithik in Tamil Nadu. The Hrithik film would have performed better if it was a solo release. Audiences today, especially in multiplexes, go by social media verdicts and many cannot afford to watch two films the same weekend.”

The star power of SRK enabled Raees to dominate the box-office, though both films carried only average reports in the local media. As pointed out by trade analysts, both the films collections are nowhere near Aamir Khan’s Dangal, which could penetrate across rural Tamil Nadu.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui: Shah Rukh Khan has the daring to do a negative role

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who was recently seen sharing screen space with Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Raees’, just cannot stop praising the superstar.

The actor says that the best thing about Shah Rukh is that he is not scared to come out of his comfort zone. “What I admire in Shah Rukh the most is that he being a superstar has come out of his comfort zone and has done a dark film like this, which is a rare thing. People (actors) often play safe games (referring to roles and films). Shah Rukh has the daring to do a negative role, it’s a big thing. I admire this quality in him,” Nawazuddin said.

He adds saying that the superstar inspires him. “He is very humble, sensitive and a very understanding person. His thoughts inspire me. It’s a big compliment for me when he praises my work. He is an experienced actor, and an actor of his stature praising me is a big compliment for me,” he said.

Nawazuddin shocked the audience with his entry in the film, where he is seen as Michael Jackson’s impersonator. “It (dance part) was Rahul’s idea and I had to practice it,” he concluded.

The movie also stars Pakistani actress Mahira Khan as Shah Rukh Khan aka Raees’ love interest. It has been receiving amazing response at the box office.

Trump executive order: Google employees’ protest, sends across a strong point

Google is one of the most influential internet companies in the world and part of a tech conglomerate Alphabet. It is also a company whose employees have been quite vocal in their criticism of the executive order that was passed by Trump targetting immigrants. Sure, a lot of tech CEOs raised their voices against the order. We have a whole list here. But in the case of Google, it is not only the CEO, but also a co-founder, former CEO as well as the Google employees themselves, who have made their stand clear over the last few days.

Walking the talk

Pichai in an email to staff said the US ban on foreign nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries will hit at least 187 Google employees.

“We are upset about the impact of this order and any proposals that could impose restrictions on Googlers and their families, or that could create barriers to bringing great talent to the US,” the Wall Street Journal quoted Pichai as saying in the email. “It is painful to see the personal cost of this executive order on our colleagues,” he said.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin, whose family immigrated to the US in 1979 from the then Soviet Union, took part in the protests taking place at the San Francisco international airport. While protesting in his personal capacity, Brin said that he was protesting because he himself was a refugee.

Recently at a meeting with Google employees, Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman of Alphabet said “that the Trump administration is going to do evil things as they’ve done in the immigration area and perhaps some others.” Schmidt did say that the government is focussed on economic growth in his meeting with employees. He said that these ‘evil things’ will be done while keeping the focus on the growth rate in the US by increasing federal spending.

According to reports, there were about 2000 employees participating in the protest on 30 January, and these included Google top brass like Sundar Pichai and Sergey Brin, both of whom are technically immigrants.

Google has also set up a $4 million fund for immigrants. This fund includes $2 million contributed by Google’s own employees. All things point to the fact that Google employees, while not in the official capacity, are taking a political stand by their actions and gestures.

Wooing the Republicans

It is no secret that Google backed Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton during the Presidential elections. But the company has since been trying its best to get into the good books of the Trump administration as well. According to Bloomberg Google had sought a ‘DC veteran to act as liaison to conservative, libertarian and free market groups’.

Image: Reuters

However, Google / Alphabet have made it public whenever it has met with Trump. For instance, when Trump met with the top tech CEOs from Silicon Valley, Larry Page was present. More recently, even Eric Schmidt had met the president at the Trump Tower. According to Buzzfeed, Google states that it was better to work behind the scenes with the administration, rather than making statements which would antagonise people from the administration with whom Google / Alphabet has to work.

Schmidt has also stated to his employees that he did all he could in his power to dissuade the administration from taking an anti-globalisation and discriminatory stand on the immigration order, but nothing has come out of it.

AP

Pichai has also tried to explain why it is counterproductive for Google as a company to take a stand officially. In a statement to Vice News, Pichai said, “If you publicly take a strong position, once they’ve identified you’re completely on one side, you lose the ability to come to a rational position. We get very strong reactions when we try to reach out to the other side. Taking public positions is productive in some cases, and counterproductive in others.” According to a New York Times report, Google also recently organised an event for Republican lawmakers.

Treading a fine line

While on the one hand Google and Alphabet employees are protesting against the controversial executive order, on the other hand, it is trying to be in the good books of the Trump administration as well. In doing so, Google and its parent company Alphabet are trying to find a right balance between its employees putting forth a resistance against unfair orders, at the same time not antagonising the government in the official capacity.

At the end of the day, a lot of Google and Alphabet’s projects require government co-operation. So it is treading a path which any profit-making institute would take.

Targetting immigrants from certain nations based on religious lines, specially when a lot of the top US companies have been built by immigrants, smacks of arrogance. It is then heartening to see employees of the Silicon Valley tech giants taking to the streets to protest against this unfair executive order.

Whether the companies or its employees would be punished for these protests, is something only time will tell. But if there are penalties to be paid, then that would set a wrong precedent.

Disha Patani: There is a big risk of being slut-shamed in case relationships don’t work

More than her debut performance in the film ‘M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story’, Disha Patani has been in the news for her alleged love relationship with Tiger Shroff. They have often been spotted together and have been linked to each other since the beginning. But like the norm goes, they have tried to hide their relationship under ‘We Are Just Good Friends’ tag for like forever. Though they do not refrain from accepting that they are close to each other, but they do not openly confess that they are dating.

Once again, Disha has commented on her relationship with Tiger and has said, “Frankly, I am boring. My life is all about the film set, gym classes and home. I have never asked Tiger whether he wants to talk about his life. When people ask me, I say no. I never hide anything or stop people from asking about Tiger. I am not shy about my personal life. Yes, Tiger and I are close. We are good friends, obviously. There is nothing special about going for parties or catching up for a meal with friends. I understand this (gossip) is part of the profession. Of course, there is a big risk of being slut-shamed in case relationships don’t work. We are actors; we can never be free (speak freely). I have to think a thousand times before I speak. If I am myself and end up saying one wrong thing, there will be 1,000 negative tweets about me. There is no rule that you have to be open about relationships. To each his own.”

Talking about her films, Disha is awaiting the release of her International film ‘Kung Fu Yoga’. It stars the legend Jackie Chan and Bollywood actor Sonu Sood.

Koffee With Karan 5: Sania Mirza and Farah Khan are a riot on the show

The next episode of Karan Johar’s ‘Koffee With Karan 5’ with have Tennis player, Sania Mirza and director Farah Khan gracing the couch. The two are besties in real life and that is more than evident in this fun promo.

In the teaser of the episode, when Karan Johar asks Sania as to, “Where is Sania Mirza in my life? I need to be Sania’s friend,” Farah immediately warns Sania, “But, he will become your friend only because you are world’s number 1, I hope you know that.”

To this Sania asks, “Is that why you haven’t called me on Koffee till now?”. And Karan said, “I was waiting. As soon as you turned number 1, you got a call.”

Karan further asks Sania as to who according to her in Bollywood who should put his shirt back on and Sania replies, “Nobody should wear shirts. Everybody should take them off.”

Karan then moves to Farah what would she do if a friend of hers is dating Ranveer Singh and Farah quips, “Carry a big box of condoms.” And what if her friend dates Ranbir Kapoor and she says, “If any of Ranveer’s condoms are left, please take them.”

Going by the promos, the episode is sure going to be a riot.

Bigg Boss 10 winner Manveer Gurjar: 'Salman is a desi banda who'll give the right advice'

When ‘notorious’ Noida boy Manveer Gurjar entered the Bigg Boss 10 house, his boorish demeanour and violent streak raised doubts about his ability to be a sensible and prudent player. But as the days passed, one saw a complete makeover in his behaviour, and it was his tenacity, simplicity, attitude, loyalty and hunger to win every task that made him the most admired contestant of the season — so much so that the 29-year-old ‘Indiawala’ walked away with the trophy after giving tough competition to VJ Bani.

“Honestly, I hadn't thought about it at all. I had never imagined this, it has happened without any sort of expectations. If I have won then perhaps I have done something good. But jis raaste se mein ja raha tha, the support and the votes I was getting, I realised that I was doing something right. It was only half-way through that I started thinking about winning the show,” said Manveer, holding his heavy trophy and mischievous glint in his eyes, meeting with Firstpost immediately after his win was announced in the two-hour plus grand finale aired on Colors TV on Sunday night (29 January).

“I entered and contributed to the show as a commoner and I don’t have any feeling of a celebrity. Maybe that feeling will sink in when I go back to my hometown,” Manveer added.

Time and again he lifted the trophy for pictures and despite the pain in his right shoulder, never once did he stop smiling. Recollecting his winning moment, Manveer said, “On one side was Bani and on the other side was me, with Salman standing between us. That feeling was simply great. Even if I had lost to Bani, I would have felt that I got lesser votes because Bani has a bigger fan following. But now that I have won, I feel my supporters overpowered her fan following and I thank all those supporters.”

“When I went inside the house I was a different person," Manveer admitted, looking back over his journey. "I was short tempered and people were really scared of me — which was quite apparent in the first week. Salman Khan also pointed out that to me. I thought if I am going to stay in the house with the same attitude as I was outside the house, then I won’t be able to survive and I decided to go on the backfoot. I played more with my heart than my mind. I feel as if an entire makeover of my personality has happened after coming out of the Bigg Boss house.”

He further said, “When I walked inside the Bigg Boss house, my only aim was to mend my broken relationships and show the world who the real Manveer is. Each day in Bigg Boss, I strove to achieve this goal. Today, as I hold the Bigg Boss trophy, I cannot help but recollect every single day that I have spent inside the house — every task, every circumstance.”

Manveer valued everything that Bigg Boss offered him. His chemistry with Manu and Mona Lisa set new benchmarks of friendship, and proved that relationships fostered on a reality show can last a lifetime. Not only did Manveer live through the challenges but he also managed to repair his relationship with his father.

Initially, for first few weeks, Manveer was not seen as confident and depended heavily upon his buddy Manu Punjabi. So what changed? What was the turning point for him?

“Going inside the house and isolating oneself is very very easy, but for me to live life, I think it has to be shared with somebody. There was that bonding between Manu and me and I didn’t have any problem taking suggestions or advice from Manu. Walking in Manu’s shadow didn’t make any difference to me. But the day I saved Manu from nominations by shaving off my beard, the same day I landed in trouble because the other person didn’t save me. I finally realised that if this game will continue like this, then I will have to play smart. For the first couple of weeks, my co-contestants felt I was a strange personality, and at that time I needed somebody’s support. Manu had some experience as he had already done a show, he knew how to play in front of the camera. But though I listen to others, I eventually listen to my heart. Then I decided to play the way I wanted to, and I came to know that I was being appreciated outside. So if people liked me the way I was, then why should I hold somebody’s hand? Further, my father wanted me to pull together my act.”

While Manveer takes back many good memories from his stay in the Bigg Boss house, he would like to go back and change one thing in the house — the food scene. “I was quite rattled by the food rationing. I got to know about it only once I was inside the house. People were hiding eggs, rice and other food items! I wish they sent food from outside so that this doesn't happen.”

Among his memorable moments, he counted: "I will certainly miss the voice of Bigg Boss, the way he would call us in his booming tone... I will remember our interactions in the bedroom, time spent in the living room, activity room and then all those tiring tasks. Then, when I was fighting for captaincy with Gaurav, I slipped and fell with my head hitting the floor. I got five stitches for the same but I continued. And I will never forget the task towards the end — the 'Bungee Cord' — that brought me to the finale when we were tied to the harness. I held myself in place for over four hours while facing many rough and tough situations but eventually I got good results."

Of course there were certain unfortunate events too that Manveer would like to permanently erase from his memory — especially the presence of Swami Om and Priyanka Jagga, who were shown the exit door of the Bigg Boss house for their obnoxious behaviour. “In the beginning, we couldn’t gauge what kind of people Swami Om and Priyanka Jagga were, until we started interacting with them. And when we saw the real side of these two, things had gone out of our hands. Both left the house on a very bad note and I feel bad because like us, they were categorised as commoners. Here I have won the show but they disrespected and were made to leave the show,” said Manveer.

And if there is one more person who the winner feels didn’t deserve to be in the house, that is the television actor Gaurav Chopra. “That's because there were a lot of expectations from him. Even in the show, both of us had problems with each other and they never got cleared. I think he was conscious about his image and did not give much to the show — he remained an actor," said Manveer, adding that he would want to stay in touch with Manu, Mona, Nitibha and Lokesh. Also on the anvil — growing back his beard!

Manveer is now chalking out his future plans, and he is very clear that he wants to continue entertaining people. “That can happen only if I enter the profession of acting. I would like to take up anything that would suit me and my personality. I would like to get into movies or television, but never politics. When I asked Salmanji, what I should do, he said, 'Do whatever you do want to do man!' So I would like to shift to either Delhi or Mumbai and I will also bring my father along,” said Manveer.

And what has Manveer decided to do with his prize money of Rs 40 lakh? “I have already handed over the money to my father, my family, and we have decided to donate 50 per cent of the amount to Salman’s charity. Let my family decide what they want to do with it, now it is all their money,” said Manveer, who was feeling extremely anxious and curious about attending Salman’s after party for the present and past contestants. And about his bonding with the show host, he said, “Salman’s large-heartedness is something I could relate to and hence I kept addressing him as ‘Ji Bhai’. I felt he was a desi banda who wouldn’t cheat but always give me the right advice.”

Akshay Kumar's Republic Day idea: An app to help families of martyred soldiers

It was in October 2016 that Akshay Kumar had posted a message in support of jawans an their families, post-Uri attack. While public discourse had been taken over by the issue of whether or not cultural relations with Pakistan should be boycotted (most stridently, in the demand for the ouster of Pakistani artistes from the country), Akshay posted a video on social media that asked people to focus on the real issue: providing succour to the families of those soldiers whose lives had been lost in the terror strike at Uri.

Now, in the run-up to Republic Day 2017, Akshay has put out another video that indicates he wishes to walk the talk. The Rustom actor has proposed the creation of a mobile app and website that can help in delivering much-needed financial aid to the families of martyred Indian soldiers. The app will allow donors to directly pay an amount of their choice into the verified bank account of the departed soldier's next of kin.

Akshay began his video message with a disclaimer: "This idea is directly from my heart. May be it is useless or can be a big hit."

He then explained his concept:

"I think that our country should have a website or a mobile app which directly connects the kin of martyred soldiers and the people who want to extend help to them. This website will host a list of the names of the martyrs, along with the bank account numbers of their close ones — mother, father or wife. And if someone wants to help that jawan's family financially, they can directly make a contribution into their accounts. That account number will be deleted once the total deposited money accounts to Rs 15 lakh. By this, family members of the martyred soldiers can directly use that money."

Akshay asked his fans for suggestions on fine-tuning the idea, adding, "With the permission of the Indian Armed Forces, I myself will anchor this mobile application and website."

In recent times, Akshay's image has increasingly been linked to that of the 'patriotic superstar', with his onscreen oles and offscreen endeavours.

Raees movie review: Career best for SRK and a commercial entertainer (in a good way)

On my way to the press screening for Raees, I happened to cross the Paradise theatre, an old single screen in the suburb of Mahim. Next to its dusty facade was strung up a poster of the film, Shah Rukh Khan’s face looming large over much of it, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, backed up by several other cops, smaller figures in the background.

The preview that had been organised for the press couldn't have been held at a more different venue than the Paradise: we were at Le Rêve right in midst of Bandra’s swish Hill Road; the theatre itself goes in for a pretty Baroque decor, with crowds of roses clashing with Victorian-style gaslight fixtures all making for a fairly surreal setting. But here too, a poster of Raees had Shah Rukh Khan looking larger-than-life positioned strategically by the gate, enticing audiences within.

This tale of two theatres indicates what Shah Rukh Khan has attempted in Raees: he's wooing the multiplex audiences who have always been fans of his suave, urbane persona, yes; at the same time, he's also reaching out to the single screen moviegoer with his most ‘massy’ film in recent years.

And make no mistake, Raees is the quintessential commercial entertainer. It is to the credit of its director Rahul Dholakia (Parzania, Lamhaa) and its leading men Shah Rukh Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui that Raees is also so much more.

Raees is set in the Gujarat of the 1970s and ‘80s, when Prohibition has been in effect for well over two decades. It narrates the story of Raees Alam (Shah Rukh Khan), in whom the famed entrepreneurial spirit of the Gujaratis takes a turn that runs contrary to the letter of the law.

We start off with Raees as a young child, who serves as a runner for a bootlegger. In school, he has trouble reading the board; he is given a pair of spectacles. The glasses give him his vision back, they also give him a violent aversion to being referred to as “battery”.

Raees is affected by one particular incident — when he is upbraided by a policeman for warning an establishment selling illicit liquor of an impending raid, his mother steps in to save him. The cop ridicules Raees’ mother for being a ragpicker, she tells him, “Koi dhanda chhota ya bada nahi hota, aur dhande se bada koi dharm nahin hota” a thought that impresses her son greatly. He decides that he will get into the liquor business himself, but not the cheap desi daru one — he is going to go the whole hog with imported spirits. For this, he signs up to be a runner for Jayraj Seth (Atul Kulkarni) — the first one to ever observe of Raees: “Baniye ka dimaag aur miyanbhai ki daring”.

We see Raees grow into a young man, determined to set up his own business rather than serving as a lackey to anyone else. This is easier said than done, of course. And so the stage is set for Raees to outwit not just his contemporaries in the business, but also the law.

The law here shows up in a particularly challenging way in the person of Inspector Jaideep Majumdar (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), an honest, upright, unflappable (if eccentric) officer.

It is perhaps a sign of how vital this antagonistic but oddly respectful relationship between Raees and Majumdar is to the plot that Nawazuddin’s ‘entry scene’ is filmed with as much style as Shah Rukh’s himself. (He appears — to great effect — as a Michael Jackson impersonator!) Not even Mahirah Khan, who plays Raees’ love interest and later, wife, is given the same kind of entrance.

By halfway point, we have Raees as the leading figure in the illegal liquor business in his part of Gujarat, firmly in Majumdar’s sights, and having descended into a spiral of shocking violence that he hasn't anticipated committing.

A note on the violence itself: this is no stylised, sanitised action. It is brutal, bloody, and very physical. The violence reaches a crescendo with Sunny Leone’s ‘Laila Main Laila’ song — an oddly operatic soundtrack to Raees’ most violent act yet.

Raees is motivated primarily by the profit motive, he is not a sadist — although he isn't averse to using violence when the situation demands it. But he is also endearing, especially in the moments reserved for his wife and his closest friend (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub). Even in his arrogance, he is appealing.

The second half builds on this other side of Raees Alam: the Robin Hood do-gooder sort, who earns the goodwill of the poor with his charitable deeds. The frenetic pace of the plot so far slows down a bit as we spend some time getting to know Raees, the man. By a twist of fate, this is also the time when Majumdar (Raees’ old nemesis) is getting to know the gangster he’s been on the tail of so far. The connection between the duo is depicted cinematically: when Raees wishes for some chai, it is Majumdar, far away, who reaches out for his cutting glass.

Raees’ trajectory is very similar to that of Pablo Escobar (as seen in the Netflix series Narcos; or even in any of the other gangster flicks director Dholakia has said he was inspired by, such as Godfather and Scarface. Surprisingly, Raees' approach also reminded me of Abhishek Bachchan in Guru, delivering this monologue: 'Sarkari darwaze the yeh aap ke banaye hue. Ya to laat mar kar khulte the ya ji hazoori de ke. Maine dono kiya, jahan laat mar sakta tha laat maari, jahan bola salaam do maine bola salaam lo'). He comes from nothing, rises to dizzying heights, but discovers that it is when you reach the top that you must face the biggest hurdles.

Raees realises this when he is let down by his collaborators in the government; he now decides to wrest the power he does not have yet — political, and contests elections. You can't help but know that his rise cannot go unchallenged. Soon enough, his troubles are beyond his powers to fix — be it in terms of money, muscle or wit.

Before we reach the end though, there are plenty of twists and turns — betrayal, defeat and widespread death.

There is a circularity to the story and dialogues as Raees races towards its finis. It also gives a chance for Shah Rukh Khan to deliver what is by far the most crowd-pleasing dialogue of them all: “Dhanda mera dharm hai, par main dharm ka dhanda nahi karta.

What a fine, fine performance this is by Shah Rukh Khan — possibly a career best. And what a fine, fine film this is by Rahul Dholakia. Its triumph is that it brings the best of ‘Bollywood’ — the sheer entertainment and glamour and scale of it — to a gripping story. What it's attempting is most evident in a scene where Raees (Shah Rukh) is juxtaposed against an image of Amitabh Bachchan in his 'angry young man' avatar on a movie screen. That one quick clip speaks volumes. Which brings us to the cinematography of KU Mohanan, without which, Raees would not be such a visually rich experience.
