‘Rock On 2’ movie review: Magik entertains with their magic again

After watching the trailer of ‘Rock On 2’, we had no expectations from the film. The first part is said to be a cult film, and the trailer of the second instalment was so thanda that not many people were keen on watching the film. Usually it happens that the trailer of a film is fantastic, but the film turns out to be bad, but with this film it’s opposite. Read the ‘Rock On 2‘ movie review to know why.

The members of Magik – Adi (Farhan Akhtar), Joe (Arjun Rampal) and KD (Purab Kohli) are no more together as a band, but are still best friends. Adi is staying in Meghalaya, away from his friends and family. He decides to stay away from music because an aspiring musician named Rahul had committed suicide because Magik didn’t give him an opportunity. However, one incident in Meghalaya gets him back to Mumbai. On the other hand, there’s Jia (Shraddha Kapoor) who is also a musician, but doesn’t want to perform or make it big in the music industry because of her father. Well, Jia’s music CD once reaches to Magik and they decide to recreate the magic of Magik. However, on the day of performance, Jia comes on stage and doesn’t perform. She backs out as she feels that her father will not like that she is performing on stage. While these things are going on, there’s a shocking element that unfolds just before the interval, but that’s damn predictable. The second half once again moves to Meghalaya, and it’s all about how Magik comes back together, but this time for a social cause.

The story of the film is written by Abhishek Kapoor and Pubali Chaudhari. They have come up with a good story and have very well mixed music with emotions. The point that how old generation people don’t like the new generation’s fusion music, comes out very well. Screenplay of the film is nice, but there are very less wow moments. The second half just goes on without any ups and downs, but then the climax beats up the energy. Shujaat Saudagar makes a decent debut as a director. It can’t be called an amazing debut, but it’s not even bad. As a director he narrates what the story and screenplay demands. Marc Koninckx’s cinematography is excellent. Shillong is shown beautifully.

Songs of ‘Rock On’ are still remembered, but that won’t be the case with ‘Rock On 2’. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy tried their best to come up with good music, and few songs are good, but not all. The track ‘Jaggo’ is the worst one. In the climax, when the ‘Rock On’ title track starts, there’s a smile on our face because we are so happy to hear it once again in the theatres.

When it comes to actors, Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal and Purab Kohli are simply mind-blowing. Their chemistry as friends steals our hearts once again. Shraddha is good, but fails in doing high-octane emotional sequences. Shashank Arora is wasted. The actor, who plays the role of Rahul, is superb. Prachi Desai is good in her small role. She has nothing much to do in the film.

Well, ‘Rock On 2’ might not be credited as a cult film, but it won’t be a bad option for you this weekend.
