Mukesh was the sixth child in a family with ten children. In his childhood, he learnt to sing by listening to the singing master of his elder sister from an adjacent room. During his early career, he was influenced by singer KL Saigal. Mukesh sang many memorable hits with music directors Naushad Ali and Kalyanji Anandji. In 1974, his song “Kai baar yuhi dekha hai” from the Basu Chatterjee directed Rajnigandha won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer. He has won four Filmfare awards for best playback singer, with fourteen nominations over the course of his career.

Apart from playback singing for Bollywood movies, Mukesh also released Bhajans, Ghazals and Classical Music. Mukesh died suddenly on 27 August 1976 on the eve of a concert. The concert was performed by playback singer, and Mukesh’s son, Nitin Mukesh. His songs continued to be released in movies after his death. The Doodle is just for India. On 27 June, Google had commemorated the seventy seventh birthday of Indian playback singer RD Burman.
